Two years ago I finally replaced the old electric coil cooktop with gas. Instead of open burners, it was a sealed burner unit with a stainless steel surface. Being used to open burners from previous cooktops where you can remove the burners to clean, I was now befuddled as to how to clean the cooktop of the burnt on grease. I am not that fastidious when it comes to cooktop cleaning. A wiping after each use, but a few months would go by before cleaning the real burnt on stuff.
Seems that a lot of cooktop cleaners are made for glass cooktops and do not mention stainless on their labels. I had been using Easy-Off Fume Free Oven Cleaner, but on the back label it says not to apply to aluminum, which the burner bases are made of. After spraying, I would wipe the cleaner off the aluminum parts. Because it's in an aerosol can (and the cooktop is horizontal), after a bit more than half the can is used, I would have to gently swirl the can as I sprayed. And lastly, I needed to be careful about not spraying down into the burner, or the spray bouncing onto non-cooktop surfaces which could be damaged by the oven cleaner.
Then lo and behold, Easy-Off Cooktop Cleaner appears. It lists stainless steel as one of the surfaces, and there is no caution against using on aluminum. The cleaner comes in a plastic squeeze bottle. Applying the cleaner is much like squeezing out ketchup, so there is no spray bounce and no swirling to do. The stuff pretty much goes where you point the bottle. Well, until the bottle gets close to empty and the cleaner tends to spurt out (like ketchup).
The instructions say to apply and wipe. I found that for those really burnt on stains to let the cleaner sit for an hour. (Sometimes more when I'm doing other things and loose track of time). I don't have to use as much elbow grease. I find this much more to my liking than first scraping the stains, which the instructions say to do.
The cleaner cleans so well that the area right around the burners where the stubborn burnt on grease is is a lighter shade than the rest of the top. But the Fume Free Oven Cleaner also did this. I would use an ordinary stainless steel cleaner (the kind for fingerprints and smudges) on the whole surface, and the shading would even out.
This cleaner has abrasives, which must be the micro particles described on the label. They must truly be micro sized as there is no visible scratching.
I wish the bottle had a longer spout; more like a glue bottle. Then I could squeeze the stuff out right to the base of the burner where the really stubborn stuff is, instead of the base itself getting in the way of the stubby spout. Also the bottle size is 8.1 oz. An economy size, 16 oz, would be the ticket for me.
