GSI Outdoors Coffee Pots and Boilers Review

GSI Outdoors Coffee Pots and Boilers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This basic boiler coffee pot gets the job done. The lid on this boiler is attached, so you don't drop it in the fire and make the other cowboys mad. The GSI brand pots are a little thin and easy to dent, and the lids are not always a perfect fit. Old pots are much thicker. But for the price this one will do the job.
You can also use the other more sturdy brands percolator pots and take out the basket and tube.
Boiled coffe is a learned procedure and takes practice. If you cannot face having a bit of grounds in your coffee, or a dented pot with black soot marks on it, this may not be for you. This pot is not really for the stove. A boiled coffee pot like this one is meant for the campfire, or the fire-pit at home if you have one.
CARE OF POT: If you want it to stay nice and clean looking, wet the outside with a bit of soap before you put it on the fire, and let it dry to an invisible shield. Soot wipes right off when you wash it. Unless this stays outside all the time, this is a really smart idea to save the nice color on your pot. There is no basket, filter, tube, or other clutter to worry about, I want as little fussiness as possible for campfire coffee.
RECIPE FOR BOILED COFFEE: Here is a recipe from the book I am writing: Use 3/4 cup of coffee grounds per quart of coffee, or one coffee measure scoop per coffee cup of water. Heat the amount of water you intend to use in your pan over a hot fire, until boiling. Then add the coffee grounds, and an eggshell. Yes I said an eggshell. Get the water back to boiling as it slows for a couple of minutes after dropping in the coffee. Pull the pot off the fire and set it aside for a few minutes. Pour in a 1/2 cup of cold water. Along with the eggshells, this helps the grounds sink to the bottom of your pot. Some people do not like the cold water trick as they want the coffee as hot as possible. If that is you, just set it aside about 5 minutes to settle. Now the next secret to this is.... Don't pour it out! Instead use a scooper or a ladle to serve your coffee so that you do not stir up the grounds again. If you do not have a ladle, pour really really slow. That is why the lid on a boiler is supposed to be bigger than a lid on a percolator. TIP: Remember not to drink the cup to the bottom, throw out the last bit has grounds, then get a fresh cup. Now when I was a kid there were tricks that my uncles used when hunting involving socks as bag for grounds, but don't even ask me to go there. This type of pot is also convenient for leaving on the fire during the day to keep hot water going for washing dishes, bathing, cooking, or to make some hot chocolate or tea in the cup.
Now keep in mind that this page lists about 6 or more different size posts, some are percolators, so make sure you get what you really need. Boilers tend to come in bigger sizes that percolators, so if you need a BIG pot, you can get a boiler all the way up to 36 cups. Now that looks impressive on a fire. I hope all this helps you, Happy Trails!

I originally purchased this percolator to throw in my suitcase for business and vacation travel because I can't stand those funky hotel coffee brewers and cheap single-serving coffee packets. But, this Presto percolator is such a fast brew, the coffee is so much better, and it is so easy to take care of, that it has become my daily brewer, even when I am home. There are no gaskets to remove (stove-top espresso makers), there is nowhere for mold to build up (have you ever looked at the area where the coffee comes out of the electric coffee makers after a few days?), and all of the parts are stainless steel or plastic. Plus, it doubles as a teapot while traveling; just wash it, add water, and plug it in! In less then 5 minutes, you can have a hot cup of tea in your hotel room. The parts are all solid, sturdy, and fit together perfectly, too.

Fresco Stainless Steel Coffee Percolator Review

It's a good quality coffee pot, but it's so air tight that you must lift the lid a little to let air in while pouring so the coffe comes out freely. This could create a problem because the lid could fall off while pouring. That has not happened yet to me though. Also, it's a little tough to brew the full 12 cup capacity because as soon as it starts to perculate, the coffee shoots out the spout. You would have to have the flame on the stove just right for it not to happen. So I usually only brew 10 cups to prevent this from happening.

I bought the Farberware Classic Yosemite 8-Cup Stainless Steel Percolator after battling with several automatic-drip coffee makers. All I wanted was a hot cup of coffee! Now that I have given up on automatic-drip coffee makers and chosen to use a percolator, a relic from childhood, I enjoy a piping hot cup of coffee every day, as opposed to lukewarm brown water. This percolater is easy to use, cleanup is easy, my coffee tastes better, and the wonderful smell permeates my kitchen as it perks. Why automatic-drip coffee makers ever came to be is beyond me. Another example of the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Clear glass percolator top, fits Farberware, etc. Review

Clear glass percolator top, fits Farberware, etc.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I previously purchased the Farberware "Yosemite" stove top percolator from Amazon. One of the percolator's reviewers mentioned purchasing this glass top because the plastic one that came with the percolator eventually wore loose due to screwing it back on and off (probably for washing underneath the plastic ring that the top fits onto). So, I purchased this item. I know, the shipping costs exceed the price of the item since at this writing, it has to be purchased from a third party seller on Amazon. However, it turned out to be well worth it for the following reasons:
l. The glass top fits flush with the metal lid of the percolator and is secured firmly underneath the lid with a metal ring that has a drain hole. Accordingly, you do not have to continually remove the top when washing the percolator. This eliminated having to take off the original plastic top and and its ring to clean underneath (which was a pain because this required several tries to catch the screw of the plastic top correctly).
2. The glass top has a concave groove around its circumference which enables one to easily remove the percolator lid. In essence, it doubles as a handle for the percolator's lid. The original plastic top was no more than a nub that often required you to remove the percolator lid by prying it off around its edges with your nails.
3. Lastly, for the fashion conscious, it does make the percolator look better. A touch of class never hurts anything. The original top and its plastic ring made it look cheap.
Hope this helps my fellow Amazon purchasers to decide whether or not to buy this top.

Medelco 8 cup Stovetop Glass Percolator Review

I love my coffee pot, I purchased it to make tea. It makes a nice strong brew and I enjoy the vintage look and the fact that I can see the strength of my tea. A word of caution. It comes with a metal ring stuck inside the flap of the box. This is to be used as a trivet whenever brewing on an electric stove. I didn't realize this at first, and brewed my first pot without it. Happily no harm was done, and my pot didn't break as a result of the intense heat.
Now my problems with the pot: The lid is plastic, and because of the heat, it seems to have expanded. It no longer fits snuggly on. So far this hasn't been a huge problem, and I am hoping that it is finished expanding. Also, this morning I emptied the pot into my husband's cup and placed the pot back on the burner...big mistake. Even though the burner was off, the residual heat melted the bottom of my percolator insert. I should have known better. I think had there been some tea left in the pot, there wouldn't have been a problem. All in all, I don't know if I would purchase this pot again. I think I'd rather shop around thrift stores until I find an authentic vintage pyrex percolator with metal insert. "They just don't make things the way they used to!" For now, I'm shopping for a metal insert for this one.

I bought a product in Canada (sold under the name "Copco") that looks just like this one. The price seems rather high by US standards; presently it's $40 in Canada. I tried another brand with a flip-up lid, instead of the snap-on lid that this one has. It spewed coffee over the stove.
I've experimented a lot with coffee: drip, French press, electric percolators. For the best taste, it's got to be a pump-driven espresso machine, or a stove-top percolator. With this one, start with the pump tube in the pot, and prepare about 1.4 litres of boiling water, and fill to the 8-cup level. DO NOT add the pump tube after you've added the boiling water, because the boiling water can squirt out through the relief vent on the base, causing a SCALDING HAZARD! Add 7 scoops of freshly opened coffee (Do not store coffee in an air-tight container in the fridge; store it in an air-proof container in the freezer: stuff plastic bags into the can, or small glass jar, to displace the air). Next, put the percolator on a ceramic or coil burner, at high for one minute to get the percolation going, and then at low thereafter. The time: 17 minutes!! Yes, to get that really perky taste, that's how long it takes - no more, no less. If you cover the pot with a tea cozy (made of oven mitt materials) you usually won't need a microwave for re-heating. Use lots of sugar and 18% MF cream - you'll enjoy every slurp!

Coleman 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Percolator Review

Coleman 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Percolator
Average Reviews:

You need to know: there is a problem with the glass domes. The glass dome screws into the metal lid, and the glass screw threads break off on their own from the heat. Ive gone through 3 domes now. It wasnt uncommon to find shards of glass on top of the filter basket.
I use this pot at home, as I like perked coffee better- and there's darn few real percolators left. BTW, if youre thinking about buying an electric model, they all feature "fast brew" technology, and dont perk long enough. This pot is solid, but has a few shortcomings: the handle is a little unconfortable, but if you use a pot holder,(as it's designed for) it's fine. The body, lid, and basket are sturdy. The bottom is thick and sits flat on a glass cook top. But the stainless steel main stem assembly base/stem is a little thin, - wish it was sturdier- as the basket needs to be level to drip right. And dont remove the tight fitting lid by grabbing the glass dome- youll crack the bottom (threads) off the glass dome, it as I did. Coleman sends free replacements if you call the 800#. You might as well call them now to get a replacement, as it take 2 weeks to arrive.
Having said that, this pot is pretty solid, it's a good buy, and its real capacity is closer to 14 cups- I like that.
UPDATE: as I say above, the first glass dome cracked when I used it to remove the lid- it is shaped to be grabbed- wont make that mistake again. Coleman sent a replacement glass dome at no cost, no problem with them. That dome cracked within the first 10 days too, first just a little at the bottom, then practically right in half, and I did not grab it. I need to warn you that the glass dome breaking is a big issue with this pot. My pot is sitting on the shelf, not being used right now. I used it 6 weeks and went through 2 domes. Im calling Coleman and telling them about the problem, and asking them to send 5 domes so I will have enough to last 6 months. They should temper the glass on the dome to toughen it up. If youre looking for a pot to camp with choose the blue model, its very durable with no breakable parts.

There's nothing like a hot cup of coffee on a sleepy outdoor morning, and thanks to the Coleman 12-cup coffee percolator, you'll have plenty of java to share with friends, too. Made of tough stainless steel, the percolator is corrosion- and flavor-resistant, so your coffee will taste consistent through the years. All you need is a camp stove or grill to provide the heat and you're set. The percolator includes a replaceable glass knob on the top.
About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I bought these for my mom, who has a stove top percolator. After about a week, the 1st one cracked (I ordered 4, thanks to the suggestion of other reviewers). Although these are thin and seem to break easily, I haven't been able to find a thicker, sturdier top, so I guess these will have to do.
I agree with the other reviewers - by several at once to avoid paying the shipping cost more than once.

This is a great little coffee percolator, especially for the inexpensive price. For one person it makes more than I need, since the full "8 cups" comes out to about 4 normal mugs full.
I used the original plastic top for the first use, and it didn't seem to get too hot at all. Some mentioned the top melting in other reviews. Once the pot reaches a boil turn the heat down to medium, since it will still percolate there's no reason to boil on a red hot "high" burner (which may have caused the melting they mentioned).
Just in case I also purchased the replacement glass top (B0000CFM6K) advertised with the percolator here. It attached nice and tight, and works great too. I'm sure the inexpensive glass replacement top will last as long as the coffee pot.
Another great thing I noticed was that when I wet the basket, as recommended, before loading the coffee grinds no grinds ended up in the coffee at all. I thought there would be, but no grinds in any cups of coffee after a half dozen uses now. It's a great little percolator.
(I also added some photos to add to the stock image above so you can see the size of the pot, and a comparison of the stock plastic and replacement glass tops)

I have used this type of stove top coffee pot for years, and had my old one for probably eight years or so.
When I found this one I was happy to know I could continue to brew coffee atop the stove, my favorite.
This coffee pot was a dissapointment. As soon as I took it out of the box I noticed the handle was a bit loose. Within a couple of weeks, the handle broke off. It was if it had been glued to the pot, as there was no hole into the pot where the handle was. The coffee pot is pretty much useless now, a big dissapointment.
I hate to write bad reviews, but felt it only fair to tell the truth about my experience.
Quite possibly, I received a defective pot and it is a chance thing.
I will not order any more though on line.
