(More customer reviews)This is one of those products that would probably get a 5-star review if there weren't other products on the market that are far better. I've always used StarterLogg's. One of the big box stores didn't have them and they assured me these Duraflames were the same thing - they're not.
Starterlogg's have the consistency of pressboard mixed with wax. When you separate them they leave craggly surface that starts fire easily. Duraflames are closer to MDF - much denser and smoother - harder to start. They also have a wax paper wrapper which you're supposed to light. Every time I've tried this the paper just burns off and leaves a charred lump.
The only way I've found to use these is tear the wrapper off, break a brick into smaller pieces, scrape one end to try to get a rough surface area and light. Then after it's been burning for 3-4 mins take a fireplace poker and knock off the burning end to make kind of an "ember slurry". After that it will burn good, and start anything, but it's just more hassle than it needs to be when there are much better options for the same price.
By the way, if you dont mind the effort you can make your own just by mixing melted paraffin/candle wax with sawdust.

Duraflame 00647 Colorlog Firelog 6 Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I really like Duraflame logs, so much so that we don't even bother with real wood fires anymore-- it's just not worth the hassle. Of course it's not exactly the same, and you don't get as much heat... But the effect, convenience and price make up for it. I can have a nice full fire burning all night for around $2 and don't have to deal with the wood delivery, storage, splitting anymore.
The only reason I'm lowering the score is the Duraflame Colorlogs just don't have the promised effect. They work and burn just fine, but the colored flames are barely noticeable. To my eye, its just the same orange flame, with only a sliver of blue or purple here and there around the edges.
I would recommend using the normal 4 hour duraflame logs because they last longer-- at least 3.5 hours on average. I usually cut the logs in half and use a small amount of starter gel to get them burning faster. The smaller logs still give the same flame height and full burn time--at half the price. I also stick the logs in the middle of a gas-style 'concrete log set' and it looks very similar like a wood fire. We've had more than a few guests surprised that it wasn't.

Brunton Striker Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product after using my son's Light My Fire Firesteel. The Brunton product is harder to get a good spark throw from than the Light My Fire brand. Primarily because the steel does not have a "sharp" edge. There are triangular notches cut out with ridges on the Brunton model meant to "bite" into the "flint" but I found these not very effective. In fact the steel snapped in two when trying to strike using this method... The good thing about that is now the striking steel has a sharp edge and makes striking a spark much easier and throws the spark further!
If you are thinking about buying one of these I still would suggest you buy the light my fire brand...it's not much more $ and it's just a better product.

The Swedish FireSteel Army Model works well once a strip of the black paint is remove. The MayaDust is dry, but cottonballs with the lower half dipped in Vasoline works mush better. In this I mean cottonballs normally catch fire on the first try and the MayaDust is difficult to light. Also I was hoping the tin the MayaDust came in a tin made of metalm so the fire could be struck in tin's lid and then places under small tinder sticks, as was the historic method. The tin is plastic.

(More customer reviews)I have used the brick type fire starters up till now, usually breaking them into thirds. These almost always worked well in my wood stove, lighting 6 inch diameter split logs with no kindling.
These seemed to be too small and too light to match that performance. But they are at least as good as my previous fire starters, needing no kindling to start fires in my stove. I place two split logs parallel to each other with an inch or two between them where I place one of these fire starters. On top of these I place one or two more split logs at an angle. So far only one fire starter has been all I need to get a good fire going.

It Is not at the correct angle for a tent. Glad i was awake or i wouldnt be writing this. This Product is god awful dangerous if used for camping.The sunbeam version is what we had. DO not use in an enclosed cold area. I switched to Mr Buddy Heater brand.I used it many times before with OK success- but was always afriad of fire. The cooker part is ok. (More customer reviews)I tried this type of fire starter and I'm just not impressed. You need a good knife to make shavings with, and then if you aren't careful you need to sharpen the knife. The sparking rod on the top doesn't really give you a shower of sparks either. Once you get your shavings lit it does ok, but it's more work than it's worth. I'd look into the Swedish FireSteel instead. Much better product, more sparks and no knife required.

Swedish FireSteel Scout Model (Red) with MayaDust Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this for an emergency survival kit, but like all of my gear, I don't just buy something and throw it in a bag for later use. In an emergency is the worst time to try and found out if something will work. So I always give my gear a test run. Here are the results:
The first time I tested this I was initially impressed. I set up a small amount (maybe a half a golf-ball size) of the tinder into a little bowl sort of shape on my concrete patio. Scraping the firesteel created a good shower of sparks. Took probably a good 15-30 tries before a good spark caught in the tinder. Cupped the whole thing with my hands and blew very gently to increase the oxygen. Voila! Combustion. The weather was about 50*F, very little wind, and mostly dry, late afternoon.
Second time was more realistic. It was 38*F out, 5-10mph wind, and damp air; even a little nominal drizzle. Results were less than stellar. The firesteel again created an impressive shower of sparks, but the tinder failed to ignite despite over 100 strikes. Final option (I had resolved to NOT use matches or a lighter) was to get some cotton balls out. A good four or five cotton balls made a nice bed into which to scoop up and "nest" the tinder. This time in only 5-10 strikes, a spark hit cotton and spread to the MayaDust.
Now, keep in mind, I grew up in scouting and have a good number of fire builds under my belt, including mid-winter camp-outs in the far northern states. I would not want to solely rely on the MayaDust for tinder. It gives a bit more "beefiness" to the cotton, but is not in and of itself a great tinder, especially for the price.
Essentially, MayaDust is fatwood shavings in a plastic tin. For this price plus shipping, you can get a 10 lb. box of fatwood sticks from a hearth & home store, make your own sawdust and put it in a tobacco tin.
There's no problem with the FireSteel and I would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to rely on matches or a lighter to start a fire. But don't waste your time or money on the MayaDust.

(More customer reviews)I use ferrocerium rod based fire starting heavily. I start my charcoal grill without paper or starter fluid with these rods. They work well - if you know how to use them. They will not start a charcoal briquette directly for instance.
This product has a great idea behind it - to start a fire using gross motor skills, one handed. This means that if you are hurt, cold and tired you can still use it. Great idea.
The problem is, the plastic case is weak and in cold, brittle. I have had two of these in less than a year. The first died after being dropped on a rock while I was on a light day hike. I took it out to show it to a buddy, and with my butter fingers, dropped it. The case cracked and the spring went awry and the whole works came out. Busted. Now the ferro rod inside still works, but only two handed now, one hand to hold and the other to scrape.
Get it if you want it but I'm hoping for a more Murphy proof. I figure that a survival tool should handle a dolt dropping it more than once.

I actually bought this for the little snuff box, (who's gonna pay $4 for wood shavings?), turns out it holds only 1 oz. and it's PLASTIC! Under GOOD conditions that amount might start 2-3 fires. Had it been metal, adding an O-ring would keep it's contents dry. I could've got the sticks & made much more for same price!

(More customer reviews)I've used Windmill Stormproof lighters for over 10 years. When they are working, there is no lighter I've ever had that works better. They are light, compact, easy to fill in the clear models and throw a very hot and directed flame. They are windproof enough that I've lit cigarettes on a motorcycle.H
However, and this is a biggie, they are very poorly designed for reliability. The hinges will break. The lever that opens the top will break. And sometimes they just won't light. This didn't used to be a big deal. You could just send it off to the distributor and they sent you a new one. Now they want to charge you $7.50 for each return and you get to pay the postage to ship it to them. Not much of a "Lifetime Warranty" since that almost certainly covers their cost. Bye-bye Windmill.

(More customer reviews)This All-in-One idea is really cool. As a smoker, it's very good. Easy to maintain temperature by adjusting the gas flow and air intake. It's a little dificult to run at low temps (200f) if the weather is warm. If you turn the gas down too low, a slight wind will blow out the burner. We solved the problem by giving it more gas, but starving the intake of air.
As a grill, it's not very good. It works, but not very efficiently. We have to crank the gas up real hot to get the pumice warm enough to sizzle steaks. We found that in charcoal mode, it works best after putting a grill inside, raised slightly above the vented tray bottom with some spacers. Put the charcoal on the raised grill. The extra air under the coals makes for a hotter fire.
Now the great part; fried turkeys. This is no 30,000 BTU camp stove. The burner on this baby really puts the heat on 4 gallons of oil. It's almost scary how powerful the burner is.
One final word; this setup does not come with a propane tank. If you don't have one, count on another $25-30 bucks, and on big projects, make sure it's full. Theres nothing more depressing than getting halfway through a 8 hour turkey smoke and run out of fuel.
