(More customer reviews)This is one of those products that would probably get a 5-star review if there weren't other products on the market that are far better. I've always used StarterLogg's. One of the big box stores didn't have them and they assured me these Duraflames were the same thing - they're not.
Starterlogg's have the consistency of pressboard mixed with wax. When you separate them they leave craggly surface that starts fire easily. Duraflames are closer to MDF - much denser and smoother - harder to start. They also have a wax paper wrapper which you're supposed to light. Every time I've tried this the paper just burns off and leaves a charred lump.
The only way I've found to use these is tear the wrapper off, break a brick into smaller pieces, scrape one end to try to get a rough surface area and light. Then after it's been burning for 3-4 mins take a fireplace poker and knock off the burning end to make kind of an "ember slurry". After that it will burn good, and start anything, but it's just more hassle than it needs to be when there are much better options for the same price.
By the way, if you dont mind the effort you can make your own just by mixing melted paraffin/candle wax with sawdust.

10 Lb Fatwood In Color Carton Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried every kind of fire-starter out there and always keep coming back to fatwood as being the best, easiest to use, and definitely most environmentally responsible. It contains no petrochemicals - just good-old pine resin. It's "made" by leaving pine stumps standing for a few months after harvesting the trees, so that the resin in the roots moves up into the stump. The stump is then split and cured awhile before being packaged - by the time you get it, it's dry and volatile and lights really fast and burns really hot.
All I use to get a roaring fire going is two sticks, lit and dropped between between two logs in the wood-stove. I add a small handful of bark and twigs to the blaze, then put my top-log on top of that. I heat my whole home with nothing but my wood-stove every winter, and fatwood makes that job a lot easier.
The only thing I've ever encountered that starts a fire faster and hotter is Army-surplus trioxane tablets, which are impressive, but really toxic - I was always worried about inhaling the dust or getting it into my clothes (and I wasn't too thrilled about what I was sending up the chimney, either!) And those sawdust-and-paraffin fire-starter bricks from the grocery store are just about worthless - almost as hard to light as plain wood! So fatwood it is for me, and has been for years now.
This particular product is also the best deal per pound that I've found so far for fatwood - even after adding shipping and handling. The box it comes in is a nice bonus, too - easy to dispense from and store. I hope Amazon keeps offering it!

Duraflame 00647 Colorlog Firelog 6 Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I really like Duraflame logs, so much so that we don't even bother with real wood fires anymore-- it's just not worth the hassle. Of course it's not exactly the same, and you don't get as much heat... But the effect, convenience and price make up for it. I can have a nice full fire burning all night for around $2 and don't have to deal with the wood delivery, storage, splitting anymore.
The only reason I'm lowering the score is the Duraflame Colorlogs just don't have the promised effect. They work and burn just fine, but the colored flames are barely noticeable. To my eye, its just the same orange flame, with only a sliver of blue or purple here and there around the edges.
I would recommend using the normal 4 hour duraflame logs because they last longer-- at least 3.5 hours on average. I usually cut the logs in half and use a small amount of starter gel to get them burning faster. The smaller logs still give the same flame height and full burn time--at half the price. I also stick the logs in the middle of a gas-style 'concrete log set' and it looks very similar like a wood fire. We've had more than a few guests surprised that it wasn't.

(More customer reviews)I have used the brick type fire starters up till now, usually breaking them into thirds. These almost always worked well in my wood stove, lighting 6 inch diameter split logs with no kindling.
These seemed to be too small and too light to match that performance. But they are at least as good as my previous fire starters, needing no kindling to start fires in my stove. I place two split logs parallel to each other with an inch or two between them where I place one of these fire starters. On top of these I place one or two more split logs at an angle. So far only one fire starter has been all I need to get a good fire going.

Liberty Mountain Magnesium Fire Starter Review

(More customer reviews)For me, the idea of this kind of a product is to give you fire in an emergency. You are out there on a fine Spring or Fall day, for example, and the weather takes a sudden bad turn on you. Or maybe YOU have taken a bad turn and have to spend the night instead of getting back home or into camp on schedule.
I have started fires at one time or another using most popular methods (including this one) - and in all kinds of weather conditions. When light and heat are fading fast there are better, faster ways to light a fire. Most obvious are matches or lighters - but matches get wet and strong winds can easily snatch a flame. So you want a good reliable backup. But in my opinion this is not it. A big fire-steel or Spark-lite Kit are much better backup options.
Though it sounds good in theory, using these mag-flint style starters is a lot more cumbersome than it needs to be.
The first problem - for me - is getting that dime sized pile of magnesium shavings to stay in one place. This can be a challenge, especially in strong winds (or even if you are just breathing heavy).
Second is that shaving it down takes extra time that is not needed using other methods. And in the same vein, cold numb fingers (common in the situations where you really NEED fire) and the extra knife work of shaving down the magnesium is an accident in embryo.
Last but not least - it is a misnomer to call the magnesium shavings "tinder" (as some manufacturers of these products do). It is more like a super-heated match head and burns out about that quickly. Try lighting your kindling off of that magnesium alone - particularly in bad weather conditions - and chances are you will have to try again. That could mean an extra 15 or 20 minutes before you have fire (5 or 10 minutes preparing some REAL tinder plus another 6 or 8 minutes shaving down your magnesium).
Apparently a lot of people really like these and you CAN start a fire with them. But the mag-flint fire starters present some problems that other methods do not. If this is your main back-up plan for fire-starting, practice a lot with it ahead of time. You might even want to shave down some of the magnesium ahead of time (enough for half a dozen fires maybe) and carry it with you in a small bottle or film cannister.

Survival Fire Pen Aluminum Fire Piston Review

(More customer reviews)Just wanted to write a review to offset the other, very negative review this thing's gotten.
The product is an aluminum tube with an aluminum plunger. There is a knurled (brass?) screw set into the bottom, and three bands machined around the tube for a grip. The seal for compressing air is achieved by an O-ring, and this seal is sufficiently air-tight to require the knurled screw, to make a relief valve. The relief valve has its own, small O-ring. Vaseline is recommended for lubricating the O-rings, so they must be made from something other than rubber, maybe Maglight-O-ring-material. Despite Les Stroud's endorsement, his name does not appear anywhere on the product, which is good, because he whinges.
In operation... well, it's a fire syringe. You push the plunger, it heats the air. I was able to get the char-cloth supplied with the thing to light after a couple of tries, and since the O-rings are rubber and lubricated with vaseline, I did not need to re-lubricate between attempts. The char-cloth supplied is rather loosely woven (denim?), and will go out it not blown on---I've made better from tee-shirt cotton---but that's not the fault of the product, and easily remedied. I can see the O-rings as a wear item, the large one from repeated plunging and the small one from compression if the fire piston is stored improperly, with the screw tightened; one spare large O-ring is supplied, and I expect that a dive shop will have the right sizes if needed. It can be a little hard on the palm plunging such a skinny piston, but if it were less compact, it wouldn't be as compact, right? If a lot of practicing seems indicated, bracing the bottom against something solid and putting a concave piece of wood or some thick leather under the plunging-hand palm might make it less painful. Again, you can't get something this compact without making it this compact.
Is a Zippo lighter more convenient? Is a disposable Bic more convenient yet? You bet! This is why we use those to light our cigarettes/barbecues/etc. these days rather than fire syringes! But this thing does work as advertised.

(More customer reviews)Reviews for the "scout" model fire piston on YouTube can go both ways. one young man gave it a great review and a fine tutorial while another showing an inferior model gave it a poor review. the Scout Fire Piston as distributed by this company is perhaps one of the finer pieces of outdoors equipment i've ever used. as it came to me the dark colored parts seem to be made of a high density, maybe fiber reinforced plastic. the rod it metal, perhaps aluminum though i'm not sure. it was shipped to me with two o-rings(one installed) prepacked with Vaseline, charcloth and a instruction/troubleshooting/what tinders to use 8 1/2 by 11 sheet. also the durability of the ziplock bags all these came in means you can pull it out of the box, test it, put it back in the bag, toss it right in your pack and go on your expedition of choice. while i will probably never go on an extended excursion without matches i will definately include this fire piston as a back up emergency fire starter. it's benefits over firesteel are extreme. it makes its own heat and friction in an enclosed space while a firesteel has to first heat the tinder before it will catch. if your not to sure about forking over the big bills as i was for cocobola or buffalo horn models put faith in something that i am assured will start a fire, be it for signal, heat or what have you, an item you can scratch or dig without concern for looks because it still works. this item works. i cannot express my satisfaction with this product enough and though currently out of stock on amazon i hope more come soon as i would love to hand a few out as christmas gifts to my closest friends. i would recommend one to anyone into survival and or preparedness who wants a backup firestarter they can rely on. also the fact that it's only possible wear item is the o-ring means it leaves no trace. lighters run out of fuel, ma tches burn up after each use and firesteels are a wear item. the best tinder prescribed is charcloth, otherwise known as roasted rag bits. its like green fire starting if there can be such a thing

(More customer reviews)I spend most of my free time outdoors. Im proficient using flint and steel, ferro rod, bow drills, and the other obvious methods. I had to get a Fire Piston to add to the mix.
I got a nice ember the very first time I tried this. I was impressed by the ease of use. It is well made and attractive on top of functional. Using this tool to make a fire starting ember is as easy as it gets. Most people would have a harder time making the tinder bundle to put the ember into than using this to make the ember.
The package comes with a small roll of char cloth, probably good for at least 20 embers. That is where my problem with this type of device comes in. You need char cloth to use it. It SAYS you can use natural materials instead of char cloth, but the specific types that will work are hard to find and even harder to get to work if you do manage to find them. This makes char cloth the only realistic way to use or rely on this. That being said, there is no place to put it. You have this great firestarting device on a cord you can carry around your neck or however else you wish, but you ALSO need a baggie with char cloth in it. You will also need a metal can to make more char cloth when the time comes. If this item had a small compartment or something to hold some char cloth, it would be 10x more useful.
This is a great item. Well made, works great. Anyone should be able to use it after only a couple of attempts. If you are going to rely on ONE firestarter, this should NOT be that one. At least a ferro rod, or blast match, will work without the char cloth, they work great with it, but still work fine without it.
If you order this product directly from the manufacturer, there is an option to add a ferro rod to the kit. Hides nicely inside so it doesnt make it any larger or change the look. In my mind this SHOULD NOT BE AN OPTION, SHOULD BE STANDARD. I would advise anyone wanting this for more than a novelty to order it direct from the manufactuer and pay the few dollars more for that option. That way, when you forget, lose, or run out of char cloth you can still make a fire.
In short, it is a great way to start a fire. It is fun and attractive as well. I would advise not to make it you only way of starting a fire, unless you add the ferro rod option from the manufactuer. Otherwise, carry a back up. (I always carry a backup anyway, but not everyone does)
4 out of 5 stars due to the ferro rod only being an option that must be made ordering from the manufacturer, and the need for char cloth but no place to store any. Other than those two issues, it is functional, attractive, and fun.

(More customer reviews)I use ferrocerium rod based fire starting heavily. I start my charcoal grill without paper or starter fluid with these rods. They work well - if you know how to use them. They will not start a charcoal briquette directly for instance.
This product has a great idea behind it - to start a fire using gross motor skills, one handed. This means that if you are hurt, cold and tired you can still use it. Great idea.
The problem is, the plastic case is weak and in cold, brittle. I have had two of these in less than a year. The first died after being dropped on a rock while I was on a light day hike. I took it out to show it to a buddy, and with my butter fingers, dropped it. The case cracked and the spring went awry and the whole works came out. Busted. Now the ferro rod inside still works, but only two handed now, one hand to hold and the other to scrape.
Get it if you want it but I'm hoping for a more Murphy proof. I figure that a survival tool should handle a dolt dropping it more than once.

(More customer reviews)I've used Windmill Stormproof lighters for over 10 years. When they are working, there is no lighter I've ever had that works better. They are light, compact, easy to fill in the clear models and throw a very hot and directed flame. They are windproof enough that I've lit cigarettes on a motorcycle.H
However, and this is a biggie, they are very poorly designed for reliability. The hinges will break. The lever that opens the top will break. And sometimes they just won't light. This didn't used to be a big deal. You could just send it off to the distributor and they sent you a new one. Now they want to charge you $7.50 for each return and you get to pay the postage to ship it to them. Not much of a "Lifetime Warranty" since that almost certainly covers their cost. Bye-bye Windmill.
