When we ordered this canner a few weeks ago, the picture clearly showed side handles. It also was being sold directly by Amazon.com instead of by a Marketplace vendor.
When we received the canner, we were disappointed to discover that there were no side handles...despite the picture on the label to the contrary. Apparently, Columbian Home Products/Granite Ware changed the design on this size canner to include a wide flange completely around the pot.
The wide flange would have been OK had it not had some sharp/rough edges on the underneath side. Since we were concerned that we might cut our fingers while carrying the pot full of water from the sink to the stove, we returned the pot. Amazon.com did make it easy for us to do so.
The pictures for this product on the Amazon.com website are inconsistent. Some show the side handles while some do not. Frustrating.
Note that side handles are available on the 21 quart size canner. Unfortunately, that size only holds 7 quart jars while the 33 quart size will hold 9 quart jars.

Food preserving has become a hobby and a leisure time activity.Gardeners enjoy freezing and canning the fruits of their summer labors to share with friends and family. The 33 quart size makes quick work of tomatoes or fruit, processing nine quart jars at a time. The high efficiency, quick boiling performance of the porcelain coated carbon steel combined with its modest cost make canning affordable. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won\'t burn and resists staining. It\'s also non -porous so it won\'t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove.

I have been canning for 20 years, I have had this canner system for 15 and I will not ever go back to boiling water bath canning ever again. This canner is not meant to replace a pressure canner for low acid foods. It is a shallow pan with a rack and a large lid. The shallow pan is filled with water and boiled, the rack fits over the boiling water and the jars are put on the rack (7 quarts at a time). When the water boils, it creates steam- steam is at least 212 degree water- steam can actually get hotter than boiling water. When the steam is at a certain level (in the instructions) you begin timing your jars. The reason that this is so easy is that it doesn't take 20 minutes after you put your jars into the rack just to come back to a boil, thus saving a lot of time. I highly recommend this product. I just made salsa and it took me 30 minutes for 14 jars- In a traditional pot it would have taken at least 2 hours. That is the difference!

A smart alternative to the water-bath canning method, this generously sized canner harnesses the power of steam to quickly preserve freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, using less water and saving both time and energy. The 7-quart unit's shallow water pan features a removable rack, which holds up to seven pint- or quart-size jars--great for large batches of jam, canned beans, applesauce, and more. Equipped with air holes for proper ventilation, the canner's large dome fits easily over the jars, and it can be inverted for use as a 15-quart kettle when the canning season ends.
Made of durable rust-resistant aluminum, the canner provides a beautiful, gleaming addition to any kitchen collection, plus ensure years of long-lasting high-quality performance. Both the pan and dome sport cool-touch side handles for safe, secure handling and transport, and they clean up easily by hand with hot, soapy water. A user manual and recipes come included. Not recommended for use on a glass-top stove, the 7-quart steam canner measures approximately 13 by 13-1/5 by 9-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
