Stainless Steel Mini Canning Rack Review

Stainless Steel Mini Canning Rack
Average Reviews:

I am a beginner small-batch canner and I needed a canning rack for a regular stainless steel pot to sit on my smooth-top stove. I tried the canning-ring method of keeping the jars off the bottom of the pan and it's really not something I wanted to continue doing. I found this rack on Amazon (the ONLY small rack available that I could find) and started using it.
It's a pretty straightforward piece of equipment. Nothing fancy. Probably designed a hundred years ago. The only drawback, and I would say it's a major one, is that the handles to pull the rack out of the water are too short. I end up scooping enough water out of the pot so I can grab the handles without burning myself. I'm thinking of buying some wire and jerry-rigging extensions to the handles.

Turn your small stockpot into a canning pot. This mini rack is 8-1/4 in. wide and 3 in. high (handles are 5 in. high). Made of stainless steel, this rack wont rust like regular steel wire racks. The superior construction and design of this rack features extra steel rings on a flat bottom with no dividers. This basket will hold 2 quart jars or 4 pint jars and with the extra rings on the bottom of the rack, small jelly jars wont fall through! Proudly made in the Midwest USA. Exclusively ours!

Columbian Home 33-Quart Jar Canner and Rack Review

Columbian Home 33-Quart Jar Canner and Rack
Average Reviews:

When we ordered this canner a few weeks ago, the picture clearly showed side handles. It also was being sold directly by Amazon.com instead of by a Marketplace vendor.
When we received the canner, we were disappointed to discover that there were no side handles...despite the picture on the label to the contrary. Apparently, Columbian Home Products/Granite Ware changed the design on this size canner to include a wide flange completely around the pot.
The wide flange would have been OK had it not had some sharp/rough edges on the underneath side. Since we were concerned that we might cut our fingers while carrying the pot full of water from the sink to the stove, we returned the pot. Amazon.com did make it easy for us to do so.
The pictures for this product on the Amazon.com website are inconsistent. Some show the side handles while some do not. Frustrating.
Note that side handles are available on the 21 quart size canner. Unfortunately, that size only holds 7 quart jars while the 33 quart size will hold 9 quart jars.

Food preserving has become a hobby and a leisure time activity.Gardeners enjoy freezing and canning the fruits of their summer labors to share with friends and family. The 33 quart size makes quick work of tomatoes or fruit, processing nine quart jars at a time. The high efficiency, quick boiling performance of the porcelain coated carbon steel combined with its modest cost make canning affordable. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won\'t burn and resists staining. It\'s also non -porous so it won\'t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove.

Last year (2008) our little planting of grapes finally started producing. We borrowed a steam juicer and were able to can about 42 quarts of grape juice (along with eating a bunch and selling some). The juicer was so nice that we decided to purchase our own. This Norpro Juicer Steamer has many of the features we were looking for. Stainless steel. Good capacity. We also liked this unit because of the glass lid which allows you to know how the process is going without opening it up (one thing we didn't like with the steamer we borrowed last year). I also noticed that the handles are designed to remain cooler than the other unit - another good feature of this steamer.

Granite Ware 50 Quart Stock Pot, Black Review

Granite Ware 50 Quart Stock Pot, Black

Of course I had no idea what I was doing when I ordered a 50 quart pot sight unseen. This washtub sized pot just barely fits on the spare center burner on my 40" stove IF I move everything else off of it. That said, it has been really useful for large amounts of gumbo I cook for a homeless shelter, or just for mixing salad for 50 people. Today I am making a 3 chicken (it could easily have handled 4) stock in it, probably a year's worth of stock for the freezer!

This 50 quart size is great for seafood boils, and serving large groups. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. I have the bigger version of the Granite Ware canner and wanted something for smaller jars, and that would fit better on my stove top. Since I don't can the larger quart sized jars this is perfect for smaller jars (especially 8 oz. 1/2 pints). Also, this size is HARD TO FIND, and the rack that goes inside is a smaller so handles smaller jars better.

Fagor 9 Piece Pressure Canning Set Review

Fagor 9 Piece Pressure Canning Set

Pressure canned apple butter, in pints and half pints, using the Duo 10-quart pressure cooker/canner and very satisfied with its performance. The spring-style pressure mechanism is very quiet compared to the rocker style, and the psychological effect is less like a rocket launch and more like using ordinary cookware. The solid-bottomed 18/10 stainless steel has a beautiful, mirror-like finish and is compatible with induction range tops (Fagor manufactures induction ranges). The pressure slide did hang up one time, and the cooker wouldn't pressurize, but with persistence the slide goes in with a little wiggling. The 10-quart Duo holds four pint or five half-pint jars on the slightly undersized canning rack - a reasonable load for the home canner. The stainless steel ladle and funnel look great and are almost as solid as the cooker. The stainless steel funnel can be submersed in boiling water, and although that's not really necessary with pressure canning, why not kill bacteria when you can? The magnetic lid lifter is a great tool if you are boiling the lids, also not necessary except for water bath canning, but if you're rinsing the funnel in boiling water, why not throw in the lids for good measure? Haven't used the jar wrench because you only tighten lids finger tight when pressure canning. The bubble freer is a useful tool and the jar lifter is a must -- it's great to get all the tools as a set. As a pressure cooker, the Fagor Duo 10-quart can handle anything you can throw into it. Brown a pot roast, throw in two cans of mushroom soup, a packet of onion soup, a cup of water, pressurize and an hour later you have a pot roast with fabulous sauce. Vegetables should go in later or above the roast in the optional steamer insert to avoid turning them into mush. The manual is well written and the DVD features a couple of professional chefs who do a terrific job of showing how easy it is to pressure cook various dishes, including grains and cheesecake. The video hosts are charming and natural, and the DVD gets five stars for taking the fear and mystery out of pressure cooking.

I stumbled upon this when searching for a "flat bottom" water bath canner for making dill pickles...it was recommended on a blog somewhere. I hesitated since I had never heard of "Jarden" brand, but then realized it was made by "Ball" of the mason jar fame.
The pot is a heavy bottom bot that sits flat on my glass cooktop. I checked the owners manual for my range and it stated I could can on top of it as long as the pot was flat and it did not extend too far over the edge of the burner. CHECK YOUR MANUAL to be certain, or call the company...not worth it to screw up the sensors on your stove, or damage the material.
The see-through glass is really handy for visual monitoring and it's well made. Stunning stainless steel takes us out of the stone age in water bath canners. I am very pleased.

Capture the sweet taste of summer for enjoyment all year long with the help of this durable and elegant canner. Measuring approximately 17-2/5 by 13 by 9-2/3 inches, the spacious unit provides a 21-quart capacity that can accommodate up to seven quart-size jars at a time for large-batch processing. In addition to preserving fresh fruits and vegetables, the pot also comes in handy for making homemade soup, hearty stews, boiling ears of corn, and more. The pot includes a corrosion-resistant chrome-plated rack, which keeps jars up off the bottom of the pot and offers a smart design that prevents small-size jars from falling through the rungs.
With a gleaming finish that will nicely compliment any kitchen decor, the canner features rugged 18/10 stainless-steel construction with a triple-layer base consisting of a thick aluminum core fused between stainless steel for fast, efficient, and evenly distributed heat (no hot spots). In addition, the unit's double-riveted, loop side handles come encased in silicone for a safe, comfortable grip when transporting, and its tempered-glass lid with steam vents allows for convenient viewing of boiling water to ensure proper processing. Designed to last for generations, the canner can be safely used on all stove tops (unlike waffle-bottom canners), and it cleans up easily by hand.

The high heat generated by a pressure cooker can kill more bacteria than a regular hot water bath, making this pressure cooker the ideal tool for canning vegetables and non-acid fruit. All-American's 30-quart pressure cooker/canner holds up to 19 pint jars or 14 quart jars. Only All-American pressure cookers/canners feature an exclusive, precision-machined "metal-to-metal" sealing system. Clamping locks align the cover to the base, forming a steam-tight seal. This means no gaskets to crack, burn, replace, and clean. At the same time, the metal-to-metal seal permits venting under unusual pressure conditions, making the seal safer than conventional rubber or composition gasket cookers.
Crafted of the finest hand-cast aluminum, this durable cooker/canner features a stay-cool Bakelite top handle, geared steam gauge, automatic overpressure release, and pressure regulator weight with settings of 5 psi, 10 psi, and 15 psi. The attractive satin finish is smooth and easy to clean. Double thick edges provide added protection on points of heaviest wear. The total measurements are 19 inches high with a 12-1/4-inch inside diameter. All-American pressure cookers are made in the USA. This cooker/canner is not suitable for glass or flat top ranges.

Back to Basics 400A 7-Quart Aluminum Home Steam Canner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been canning for 20 years, I have had this canner system for 15 and I will not ever go back to boiling water bath canning ever again. This canner is not meant to replace a pressure canner for low acid foods. It is a shallow pan with a rack and a large lid. The shallow pan is filled with water and boiled, the rack fits over the boiling water and the jars are put on the rack (7 quarts at a time). When the water boils, it creates steam- steam is at least 212 degree water- steam can actually get hotter than boiling water. When the steam is at a certain level (in the instructions) you begin timing your jars. The reason that this is so easy is that it doesn't take 20 minutes after you put your jars into the rack just to come back to a boil, thus saving a lot of time. I highly recommend this product. I just made salsa and it took me 30 minutes for 14 jars- In a traditional pot it would have taken at least 2 hours. That is the difference!

A smart alternative to the water-bath canning method, this generously sized canner harnesses the power of steam to quickly preserve freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, using less water and saving both time and energy. The 7-quart unit's shallow water pan features a removable rack, which holds up to seven pint- or quart-size jars--great for large batches of jam, canned beans, applesauce, and more. Equipped with air holes for proper ventilation, the canner's large dome fits easily over the jars, and it can be inverted for use as a 15-quart kettle when the canning season ends.
Made of durable rust-resistant aluminum, the canner provides a beautiful, gleaming addition to any kitchen collection, plus ensure years of long-lasting high-quality performance. Both the pan and dome sport cool-touch side handles for safe, secure handling and transport, and they clean up easily by hand with hot, soapy water. A user manual and recipes come included. Not recommended for use on a glass-top stove, the 7-quart steam canner measures approximately 13 by 13-1/5 by 9-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

The Granite Ware 21-Quart Covered Preserving Canner with Rack is a light-weight, lidded pot with a steel canning rack. As promised, the rack holds seven quart jars and with a little ingenuity, it can hold nine pint jars.
This canner is larger than most burners and may cause stovetop surface stains when used for extended periods. It cleans easily, holds the temperature and seems well constructed for such an inexpensive piece.
The graphic on the Amazon product page shows the canner with the rack lifted up and supported by the edge of pot. I was a tad nervous about lifting seven filled quart jars but the rack, though light-weight, was up to the task.
The only issue I have is with the height. To immerse seven one-quart jars with two inches of water above the lids means splashing or overflow will happen. I found no work-around for this problem but, for someone like me whose needs are limited (about 100 jars per season) this canner is a great addition.
If storage space was limited in this household, I would have an additional issue with the size of the canner. That's not a problem for me but it could be a consideration.
For those considering purchasing this as a stockpot as well as a canner, look elsewhere. The steel and enamel coating are too thin for anything beyond boiling water.
I am glad I made this purchase, it suits our purposes well.

Constructed with a strong steel core and a stylishly speckled black porcelain finish, the pot delivers long-lasting high-quality performance and even heat retention, while its nonstick, nonporous surface ensures fast and easy cleanup by hand or in the dishwasher--a nice feature after a long day spent in a hot kitchen. This is a very high quality, heavy weight canner. It practically screams, "Industrial strength!" The slide clips and screw-downs securely fasten the lid to the pot. No blow-outs with this baby. The weighted pressure gauge makes operation almost foolproof. And no gasket required! Before purchasing a canner, I did a lot of reading in the rec.food.preserving news group. I saw endless inquiries about sources for gaskets for canners ranging from a few years old to many decades old. It was clear some of these people had spent many, many hours in search of a gasket. Avoiding the need for a gasket became a major criteria for my purchase.
I've had my canner for a couple years and am still impressed with the quality. There are only two negatives I can think of. The heavy weight of the canner is a plus for strength and longevity, but it can work against you. The canner weighs 20 pounds when it's empty. Unless you work out regluarly, you're not going to fill the canner on the counter and then carry it to the stove. The other potential negative is the height. This canner requires at least a 16 inch clearance over your range. If your range has an upper oven the canner might not fit.

I bought this one burner camp chef stove to add to the 2 burner I had already purchased. We use these stoves to cook breakfast before riding off on ATV's. So we are not setting around camp after having breakfast. We need to clean up the dishes, fold camp back up and put it away in the Pick-up Bed with a fiberglass cover and hit the trail. With the griddle going cooking bacon and also another skillet going we needed a place to have a coffee pot cooking. And also needed to be heating water to do dishes quickly. After the bacon is cooked we have one burner heating hash brown patties and the other doing scrambled eggs with chili at the last, so the 2 burner camp chef is busy. Eggs are coordinated to be ready when the Dutch Oven biscuits are done. Why screw this gourmet breakfast up with a flimsy throw away plastic fork. This one burner stove also works with the BBQ grill and Griddle for the Camp Chef products if needed. It fits nicely in the box it came in for storage. I trashed the carry case for the two burner Camp Chef. The hardest part of breaking up camp was putting that two burner stove back in the carrying case. The zipper broke after two uses anyway. It looks cool but life is better without the frustration of trying to put it back in the case. The One Burner Camp Chef takes the pressure off doing it all quickly on just 2 burners. These two stoves with a 5# and a 10# butane tank is cool. Lots of convenient firepower that is easy to set up and put away.

... for your learning dollars, that is.
Had this for a month; free-shipped, it arrived intact and within a very reasonable time. Manual is brief and to the point.
Works fabulously with simple time-proven cast iron cookware, but don't expect omelets to come off whole easily - might do with enameled cast iron which I do not have. It is great to have minimal heat dumped into the house when you are paying for your air conditioning and it is 90°+ outside. That it worked just fine with some of my older - cheaper stainless steel pots that didn't pass the magnet test was a pleasant surprise. I plan to move it to the back porch before I try my heavy-flavored grill-pan fried fish!
Took away the 5th star since (a) heat is so localized over the center that it charred stir-fry veggies and burnt the thin-gauge pan when I got a bit over zealous with the power settings and (b) the temperature preset increments are too far apart for my liking. It shouldn't be a big deal to have more numbers of and more uniformly spaced steps since the controls are all electronic. I would use cast iron cookware exclusively unless heating a liquid, -the thickness helps distribute heat more quickly and evenly- but you will want to be extra careful of the delicate-looking ceramic cooktop surface.
All in all, a great inexpensive tool to learn induction cooking and what to look for before you plonk your money down for that big-bucks 4 or 5 element full size induction cooktop kitchen upgrade. I am happy with the purchase.

Sleek and energy efficient, this high-quality cooktop brings the comfort and health benefits of home-cooked foods to the office, dorm room, catered affair, or anywhere in need of a portable heat source. Unlike standard electric elements, it supplies an induction heating element, which delivers the same precise control over the heat as with a gas burner, but without the danger of an open flame. The single burner provides 10 power levels from 500 to 1800 watts and 10 temperature settings that range from 140 to 450 degrees F--perfect for everything from gently soft-boiled eggs to hearty soups, stews, and more. Its user-friendly push-button control panel features an easy-to-read digital display and a 180-minute timer with auto shut-off that aids in properly cooking all dishes, reducing the risks of overcooking, burning, and waste. The cooktop delivers instant heat to induction-compatible cookware; it can also accommodate non-induction cookware with the use of an induction interface disk (model 6010; sold separately). For added safety and convenience, the appliance comes with an in-line fuse, overheat sensor, an unsuitable-cookware detector, and a smooth design that wipes clean easily. Attractively housed in durable stainless steel, the induction cooktop measures 13-2/7 by 12-1/2 by 2-3/5 inches.
