Martha Stewart Collection Sand Enameled Cast Iron Casserole, 5.5 Qt. Review

I recieved this just last week as a Christmas gift. I truly love it. We have already used it to braise two cornish hens and some short ribs. We will most likely be braising a chicken in it tonight or tomorrow.
It gets incredibly hot and seems to really get the job done! It was such a breeze to brown the meat on the stove top and then add our liquid and transfer to the oven. The food I made in this has come out just absolutely gorgeous and delicious.
Our item had no chips in the enamel when we recived it and though I don't treat my cookware with kid gloves, I can say that I take pretty darn good care of my stuff, so I am hoping to keep it chip free. Contrary to the other review, I actually have a Le Crueset enameled skillet with a chip in it... I suppose it happens to the best of us.
I have only had this item for a week, but so far it's been amazing. Nothing but good things to say about it.
*edit*
(Jan 6,2010)
I would like to add to this after using this item several more times! I wanted to say that cleaning this product is a dream. After being in the oven for several hours, you'd expect all that splatter under the lid and everywhere else would be a baked on hassle... but guess what? Barely a swipe with my sponge and it's good as new!
We braised a chicken in it last night and tonight we used it to wilt broccoli rabe and cook pasta. It was great!

CorningWare 2.5-qt. Oval Casserole with Lid - French White Review

CorningWare 2.5-qt. Oval Casserole with Lid - French White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original "French White" Corningware was made of their famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.
When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available.
The pattern is attractive and can be used with any decor, but this stuff is not, repeat, really not, what people mean when they say "Corningware."
Le Creuset can do most of the above mentioned, but it being metal you cannot use it in the microwave. Stoneware cannot go on top of the stove, and repeated trips from the freezer to the oven will eventually cause it to craze and crack. And being stoneware, it will also chip, and break if dropped, etc. Pyrex glassware cannot go on the gas stove although you can take it from the freezer to the oven, and also microwave it.
The only product which could do anything was pyroceramic, and World Kitchens has chosen to remove it from the market because it is "too good."
They have recently brought back a few of the old square shapes, with the Cornflower, or plain white, calling it "vintage," but the French White shape is not making an appearance yet. If you want it, email them and ask for it!
Meanwhile, get Le Creuset for stovetop cooking and roasting (yes it is expensive but it lasts forever and cooks beautifully), and reheat things in Pyrex in the microwave.

Pyrex Bakeware 4.8 Quart Oblong Baking Dish, Clear Review

Pyrex Bakeware 4.8 Quart Oblong Baking Dish, Clear
Average Reviews:

My new (6 month old) pyrex broke violently shortly after it was taken out of the oven and set on the oven to cool. None of the stove top burners were on or had been on for hours, and ut was NOT on a burner which vents heat from the oven. All the dish contained was bread pudding, and it certainly hadn't been roasting under the broiler. The glass shards were numerous, large, sharp, very hot, and flew everywhere, with an enormously loud breaking sound, so whether or not you want to call that an explosion, I'm very glad I wasn't in the room. I've been cooking with pyrex my whole life and never had a problem with it before, so I'm loth to give it a bad review, but it was a pretty scary experience.

I've used my Le Creuset enameled cast iron cookware for over 10 years; I'd be lost without it. The excellent heat retention and even heat distribution allow you to cook over low-medium heat; you'll save energy and your cookware will last longer. But who am I kidding?--I bought my Le Creuset pans because they're pretty and oh so French! That they're energy efficient, sturdy, and easy to clean are just bonus points.
Although I own a set of the cobalt blue pans, the heart shaped red pan with lid is my favorite Le Creuset piece. It would make a great Mother's Day or Valentine's Day gift; then again it would make a wonderful present to yourself!

This set of casserole dishes is really nice. The shape and color are beautiful, and the items feel sturdy. Also, the smaller size is perfect for heating soup or frozen veggies in the microwave, and the larger size is just right for most casserole recipes. If you want something other than the usual white or clear but don't want to spend a lot for something artsy or handpainted, this set would be a very good choice.

I've used these to bake everything from a rump roast to Shepard's pie, and they are fantastic. Nice and thick porcelain meaning no burnt bottoms and a breeze to clean. The large pot will hold a 6lb roast with no problems. The smaller one is perfect for side dishes like green bean casserole or baked beans. Best part is they are pleasing to the eye and make a perfect serving dish...straight from the oven to the table.

CorningWare French White 15-Ounce Oval Dish Review

CorningWare French White 15-Ounce Oval Dish
Average Reviews:

This dish is OK, but has a couple of issues:
- Cannot emphasize this enough: THINK ABOUT HOW SMALL 15 OUNCES REALLY IS!
It's not much. Even a can of prepared soup is 16 ounces. This is an individual serving size dish. I know they give you the dimensions...but they should call it a "single serving" dish or something, just to be clearer. If in doubt, get out a ruler and look at how small 7 x 5 inches is.
- The lid could be a lot better:
It would be nice if it was clear, or had a vent. As it is now, you have to position it carefully in the microwave so the dish does not "seal" while cooking (which will ruin it).
Also, the lid kind of "dips down" into the dish - it should be the opposite - "domed" - so you can fit a bit more food in. The concave shape means that if you fill the dish to the top, some will squeeze out when you seal it. Thus making it...well, more like a 14-ounce dish! :-)
- That being said, if all you want is a teeny dish to heat up a little bit of something for yourself, the quality is good and it will do the job.

Just wanted to warn folks that Amazon's dimensions info is incorrect. Do not go by their 10" x 9" description, as this top is considerably smaller. I'm thinking these are the dimensions for the 2-1/2 quart version. Other than that, the top is perfectly fine and it's nice that replacements are available.
