GE Profile : PGB908DEMWW Gas Range Review

I haven't had a chance to use the stove yet, as the kitchen is still being renovated. This is a nice-looking stove. I like the center griddle area; it's convenient for placing hot pots. The warming drawer is also a very nice feature that I expect to use.
Unfortunately, the high-powered (right front) burner does not light evenly. The flame on the outer perimeter does not go as high as that on the inner perimeter. I called GE twice for repair. The first technician said it was supposed to be that way to prevent the high flame from burning something on the adjacent counter top (a very creative, if far-fetched, explanation). The second technician claimed to have corrected the problem, but this isn't the case. If I had known about this, I probably would have purchased a different stove. However, everything else seems to be working properly, so I guess I can live with this glitch. As for cleaning. I wish it came with removable drip pans. I called far and wide looking for one that did before choosing a stove. It seems that this is a thing of the past and is only available on more basic models of gas stoves, esp those w/o sealed burners, and electric stoves. I inquired about purchasing drip pans elsewhere, but none would fit this stove.
So, I guess I'll deal with frequent messes. The grates are double length and fortunately fit in my 30" sink. If GE is able to correct these two problems, I would have no qualms about recommending this stove.

Seems to be a lack of quality control. Loose part found in unit (delayed
installation). Mfgr. calls unit a "built in", yet the back of the smooth
top does not cover the cut edge of granite counter top...bad news.
Everything on unit seems cost effective, not consumer friendly; such as
loose open element for oven heat with minimual support, tinney drawer below
oven, and single indicater light for "hot surface", not specific.
Oven door out of square. Cleaning samples, not included as stated.
With a Mfgr. suggested retail of l399.00 seems very lacking. Enough said.

Broil King POV-35 Professional Half Sized Stainless Convection Oven/Broiler Review

Broil King POV-35 Professional Half Sized Stainless Convection Oven/Broiler

Very pleased with this unit after 6 weeks of use. It does three racks of cookies perfectly, unlike my conventional oven that does best one sheet at a time on the center rack. A pan of chicken parts took 30 min. @ 325. It has plenty of room for Pizza stones and Pampered Chef stone ware sheets. Also, if you are disgusted with the "China Syndrom" that permeates most retail products, this is manufactured in Italy. The price was better in January, glad that I made a decision to buy it then.
MORE : after a year, this is a BEST purchase, bakes bread great, would buy it again!!

T-Fal OT8065002 Avante Elite Toaster Oven Review

T-Fal OT8065002 Avante Elite Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Avante Elite Toaster Oven for about 6 months now and have used it almost every day since I bought it. I originally bought it thinking I'd mainly use it for toast but after experimenting with different items I found that it can serve as a pretty adequate oven/stove top. I'm far from a gourmet chef so this review is from the perspective of someone who can follow a recipe to make a tasty treat but who has never broasted or flambayed and who doesn't yet know what parboiled means.
As a toaster: Just about excellent. It does the "Toast" function very well. Toast was just the right amount of crunchy. The "Toast" setting also adjusts its toasting time pretty accurately so that if the oven is still hot from having used it to cook something, it will set itself to toast for less time. However I have noticed that if I've used the oven on the "Broil" setting (which gets it VERY hot) I need to remove the items from the oven a little earlier than when it actually thinks it will be done. If I left them in there until the timer went off they wouldn't get burnt or even overly dark, just darker than I personally like. I've also made toasty sandwhiches with the Toast feature. I make my sandwhich on buns or french bread and stick them in the oven, set it to Toast, and they come out toasty and melty like you would get at Quiznos.
As an oven: Excellent. The oven part of the Avante Elite cooks meat thoroughly and fairly evenly. I've cooked chicken, beef, hot dogs, breaded eggplant patties, and frozen entrees. I've also baked pizzas and banana bread. All came out pretty delicious. I usually rotate the pizzas once during cooking because the back end of the oven tends to cook things faster than the front end. The oven itself is larger than it looks. I've been able to fit all the frozen pizzas I've tried (including the fairly large Digiorno pizzas).
As a stove top: Great! I don't know if the manufacturers intended for the top "warmer" to be used as a makeshift stove top but that's what I've used it for many many times. I set the oven to the "Broil" setting (caution, it gets the whole oven very hot, but that's the very reason I use this setting) and place a stove-top safe dish on top and then fry, boil, saute or cook *almost* as I would on a normal stove top. I've fried bacon (using the included baking sheet although the bacon can be cooked inside the oven with the included broil pan) and eggs, cooked spaghetti, sauteed vegetables and tofu and have even tried cooking corn and rice up there. The corn and rice are a bit harder because the water doesn't come to a fast boil as it would on a real stove top so unless you have a lot of time, the corn and rice will have to be cooked elsewhere. The top warmer also is somewhat warped (probably from all the extreme temperature changes it undergoes) and so I had to buy a tiny egg-frying pan (it's so cute! if I'm able to add my pictures to this page, you'll see it) so that the egg would cook evenly. That is, I tried to put the baking sheet down first and then fry the egg on that but the egg just slid to one corner of the sheet and I had to make scrambled eggs that day instead. Those came out pretty good though!
So if you want a great toaster that also does justice to the "oven" part of its name AND works great as a makeshift stove top, this toaster oven is worth the money.

Nuwave 20322 Pro Digital-Controlled Infrared Tabletop Oven, Black Review

Nuwave 20322 Pro Digital-Controlled Infrared Tabletop Oven, Black

This is my second Nuwave. I use it constantly. It is especially good for preparing meals for one to two people. It does everything a conventional oven will do, only better, faster, and with substantially less electricity. Items I would once use a microwave to prepare because of the time savings, I now regularly prepare in the Nuwave Oven.
However, it is too air tight. NO moisture escapes. That has its advantages and disadvantages. Items are moist and delicious, but if you like the crispiness a standard oven creates, expect less crispiness with the Nuwave. That, though, is a minor, almost insignificant tradeoff, compared with the valuable features. (One comment to the manufacuturer: What numbskull decided to put the allegedly "peel-off" sticker on the see-through ring? It does not peel off easily at all. There are a dozen glues you could have used that would cause it to peel off entirely, instantly. Instead, you went with some cheap, nearly permanent sticker that takes forever to get off. I have ALWAYS said engineers and manufacturers should be "sentenced" to use the appliances they create and produce for at least ten years.)

True Induction Energy Efficient Single Burner Induction Cooktop (P3D) Review

True Induction Energy Efficient Single Burner Induction Cooktop (P3D)

I needed an extra burner and this meets my needs. I wanted to use it primary for pasta at the sink. Boiling on my regular cooktop, the moisture covers the microwave above it even using the fan. It is also difficult to carry a heavy, hot pot to my sink.
It looks modern enough to leave out in my kitchen so it's ready to use but compact enough to store in the pantry. I already had stainless steel cookware so I don't need any special pans to use on it.
It has other uses besides my intended use.

Hamilton Beach 31199R Countertop 1.1-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven with Rotisserie Review

Hamilton Beach 31199R Countertop 1.1-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven with Rotisserie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before buying this particular oven, I read as many product reviews as could be found. They were for a similar Hamilton Beach Oven but not this exact one. And many were quite negative. But it seemed to be just what I wanted. This would be my third countertop oven. The first one lasted over 25 years. The second one, only about 8 years. It arrived earlier than predicted, always a plus. I burned every single thing I put in it for the first week. Not the oven's fault. I'm laughing as I write this. It is so efficient and works so well and I forgot the times on the previous oven were due to it's "dying" process. So, didn't think to compensate for a "new" oven. Well, now I'm doing much better and things are marvelous from this little jewel. Cookies, main dishes, heating up sauces quickly, (I just moved, gave away my microwave and decided not to buy another), sandwiches, even toast from atisan breads are perfectly cooked. So all the burnt foods were obviously "operator error".
At first, I worried what oven ware would fit into it but no worries. I now have a very tall stack of things that will fit comfortably in this oven including several 12-inch glass baking dishes for pizza and cookies. I only had to buy cookie sheets as all the rest (bread pans, muffin tins, springform cake pan, angelfood cake pan, etc) all fit inside very nicely. And best of all, the really large and oversized items can be given away, taking up less storage space in a space-challenged apt.
I would buy this oven again and again. It's the best. Oh, yes, the "bell" rings at the completion of cooking times and I can hear it in the most distant places of this apt. We've had really hot weather this summer and I've so appreciated only having to heat the kitchen for very few minutes to cook meals then a very quick cool down afterwards. I've not even turned on the large stove/oven that is built in to this apt. And I don't plan to, either. This oven is all I need. Oh, yes, I've been using it since the end of July 2007 - slightly under a month and with daily usage.

For everything from cooking a 5-pound chicken to baking two 12-inch pizzas or a birthday cake, this extra-large 1.1-cubic-foot countertop oven makes it possible to cook whole meals without turning on the full-size oven. Three simple-to-use control knobs allow for setting the temperature; for choosing the function--broil, convection, bake, or rotisserie; and for turning the unit off or selecting the cook time or "continuous on". Its convection method continuously circulates heated air around food, resulting in even heating and 33-percent faster cooking times than a traditional oven. Or use the revolving rotisserie rack to cook meat to moist, tender perfection. Other highlights include a power indicator light, a see-through window for checking on food at a glance, a stay-cool handle, and an easy-to-clean design. Accessories include two oven racks, two baking pans, a broil rack, and a slide-out crumb/drip tray, as well as a rotisserie skewer and a rotisserie lifter. Not sure where to start? Hamilton Beach throws in a user manual with recipes for herb-rubbed chicken, baked potatoes, meat loaf, pumpkin cookies, muffins, and much more. Dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap, and the stainless-steel front-panel design looks great in any kitchen. The countertop oven measures approximately 12-1/2 by 17-1/2 by 13-2/3 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Medelco Personal Coffee Maker Review

Medelco Personal Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is simple and produces coffee I like. No more wasting paper filters for me, or drinking nasty coffee from the company coffee pot.
I used to use a French press to make my coffee at work for that little pick-me-up. That tastes good to me, but the French press is a hassle to clean, and the glass vessel I have is very delicate-- I worry it will shatter next time I wash it. There's another reason I want to get away from the French Press: I want to buy pre-ground coffee (I'm just a casual coffee drinker, not a connoisseur) and the French press allows too much of the coffee grounds and sludge into my cup when using anything finer than coarsely ground coffee. I figured I would try this product, and get a similarly tasting cup of coffee without the sludge in my cup. Well, I'm happy with the results.
The filter prevents most of the "dust" from the store-bought pre-ground coffee from getting into my cup of coffee. Well, it allows more dust to get through than a paper filter, but it performs much better than the swissgold® KF 300 One-Cup Coffee Filter I bought from Amazon.
I should probably note that I'm generous with the amount of coffee grounds I use to brew coffee. It tastes better that way.

Bosch : HGS3023UC 30 Evolution 300 Series Gas Range - White Review

Bosch : HGS3023UC 30 Evolution 300 Series Gas Range - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have owned this Bosch 300-Series Gas Range for two months. I ordered it directly from the Amazon-linked AJ Madison website. As for that store, the stove was delivered as arranged and the price was right, as it was on-sale for a few days. More on this later. Narrowed my list down to two: the Bosch and the Frigidaire FGGF3054K. The Frigidaire had a few advantages, these included a Convection oven feature, a better lower-drawer handle, a 17Kbtu front burner and a more advanced oven-rack arrangement. This Frigidaire is about $25 cheaper than the Bosch. I finally went with the Bosch because I had had good luck with their electrical components when doing repairs on my car in previous years. I also liked the heavier and more squared edges of the iron-grates covering the burners. Both stoves seem to be a good value for 8 bills. As mentioned, bought from AJ Madison. A few cautions are in order here. They will attempt to tag-on added charges after the delivery for a thing like delivering the stove up more than a certain number of steps (an arbitrary #). Before the stove is shipped, call their service rep, not sales, and tell them you will only allow delivery on condition there will be NO extra charges. I had to be a little forceful about this. And waiting for the sales department to answer the phone will require patience. These are New York-sharpies but they will be honest if you keep on top of them. I would purchase from them again, but only if the price was 25% lower than local dealers. Now some details on the Bosch stove: nice big lighted oven with a big window, fantastic non-slide full-coverage iron grating on top. The oven preheats quickly and since it is so roomy will not (my opinion) need a convection feature. All the design effort was on the burners, oven and electronics; the bottom warming/storage drawer is the typical cheapie type found on any $450 range. The working parts are fantastic, however. High-quality touchpad includes great timer functions for baking and general timing of cooking. The timers shut-off the oven as required and all timer functions beep every one-minute after timing-out, a great safety and convenience feature for me. Those not yet familiar with new gas ranges will have to get used to the electronic ignition for the top burners. Turn to lightning symbol till lit, then set to desired flame. The oven door will detent (pause) when closing but do not expect it to hold in open position solidly, as these ovens are meant to do all broiling with the door closed. On first use, you will probably notice a few things which seem like problems but are not: an error signal may pop-up on the display during first use. This immediately clears up once the stove has been plugged-in for a few minutes, clock set and the burners have been used. The other brief annoyance is that, due to the installer disturbing the gas lines, there will likely be some dust which blows up through the top burners, causing a snap sound. This clears up in a few days. Flame level adjustment is non-linear, an annoyance to some, but is compensated for by the ability to turn the flame down to an extremely low usable level. As for safety around children, the stove comes with the usual non-tip floor-bracket and has a nice electronic Lock feature for the oven door. It has the required push-to-light knobs for the 5 top burners. One caution with any of these full iron-grate stovetops is that a boy between 3-7 may get curious on seeing Mom cleaning the stove, and may lift off one of the 3 grate sections out of curiosity and drop it on his foot. Just train the little rodent. As for my 4-Star rating (see update below) of the range, I would give it a full 5 Stars but having owned the thing only a few months, I cannot comment on continued use or quality of Bosch customer service. So far, this gas range is great.
ONE-YEAR update: Oven and electronic controls are flawless. Four of the five burners light immediately with the electronic-ignition. The left-rear burner is balky, taking ~3seconds to light. One time, a pot of spaghetti boiled over a little on this burner. The flame went out and gas was issuing from the burner. With a second burner lit heating the sauce, there could have been a big problem if built-up gas had ignited. Luckily, I was in the kitchen at the time. I suspect these electronic-ignition stoves by various brands share this problem, since burner design has to be different to allow for lighting, as opposed to the old pilot-light jobs. The second problem arose when I called customer-service to report the safety issue. The woman to whom I spoke was rude and uninterested. Moreover, she was stupid. So, considering the ~minor safety issue and the non-existent customer support, a nice 5-star range will be given only three stars by this owner. All such stoves need a heat-sensor to shut off gas flow to unlit burners. Wake-up Bosch. And while you're at it, take your entire customer-service staff for a company outing at sea. Sink the boat.

Cuisinart CPC-600 1000-Watt 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker, Brushed Stainless and Matte Black Review

Cuisinart CPC-600 1000-Watt 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker, Brushed Stainless and Matte Black
Average Reviews:

First, I was a pressure cooker nut from before. I used my mother's 1930/40's Presto's until I couldn't get seals for them. When I saw this digital pressure cooker I bought it instantly. I loved it so much that I gave one to my daughter, my sis and my sis-in-law, (we're all foodies). I was cooking stuff I hadn't made in years. We ate like kings! All of a sudden, caput. I get online and search and right there on Amazon, Bobby Mac "Micronaut101" describes my very own problem! So no more trying to make the bloody thing work! I call the Cuisinart 800 number prepared to go the distance according to the reviews I've read and I describe my problem, how much I love the machine, how I've seen the problem reported on Amazon and therefore it's a known quality issue and I want a new machine. OK, she says, what's your address? No "did you send in a warranty" or anything else. Bingo, 7 - 10 days I'll have a new pressure cooker. How cool is that? Oh, and "We're sorry for the inconvenience. Have a great day." Yehaa! Let's hear it for Amazon and reviews!
[[editing review as of 6/4/09: pressure sensor wouldn't set pressure and pressure cooking wouldn't start. Cooker would get to boiling but pressure wouldn't lock the cooker and begin cooking. Little red button wouldn't come up to close opening. I would wiggle the button with a skewer or knife point to get it to pop up to close pressure hole. Hope this helps.]]
And I'm writing this so that others who may get one of those recalcitrant pressure cookers that slipped through the quality assurance check can know that they will get a new pressure cooker with the press of the number buttons. Cuisinart has decided to stand behind this one product, at least.
BTW, all of us are previous users of pressure cookers so we really appreciated the ability to sear the meat in the cooker. My family has used the Cuisinart cookbook for the pasta e Fagioli, Cuban Black Bean Soup, Chicken with Herb Dumplings and the "outstanding" Creamy Rice Pudding" And, in fact, the Rice pudding cooked so quickly that my sis didn't think it was done when the timer went off and over cooked it! Her second batch was superb. We also like Lorna Sass's "Cooking Under Pressure" and "Pressure Perfect"

Reduce time spent in the kitchen preparing meals with the help of this 6-quart electric pressure cooker--it cuts cooking times up to 70-percent when compared to traditional stovetop cooking methods. The unit traps steam inside, which builds up pressure to create hotter temperatures, and its tight seal locks in heat, moisture, and flavor, as well as vitamins and minerals for exceptionally healthy, great-tasting meals like soup, chili, and other one-dish entrees. It also works well for cheesecake and custard, because dessert should never be left off the menu. The unit's push-button controls and easy-to-read digital display eliminate guesswork, while its precision digital thermostat regulates temperatures. Choose from preprogrammed settings for high- or low-pressure cooking, browning, simmering, sauteing, and warming. For safety, the cooker must be fully locked for pressure to build, and it will remain locked until the pressure inside drops to zero. Other highlights include a 99-minute timer with an LED countdown display, cool-touch side handles, and a nonstick cooking pot that cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. A dishwasher-safe trivet also comes included. Housed in brushed stainless steel, the 1000-watt pressure cooker measures 12-1/5 by 12-1/5 by 13-1/5 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

Hamilton Beach 31199XR Countertop Convection Oven Review

We purchased this one after reading the reviews here of several models. I called the mfr to learn the differences between the 31199XR and others, and was told 31199XR lacks the rotisserie components. That's fine with us as we would never use them! It also lowered the price quite a bit. If you do not plan to use the rotisserie, buy this model!
We bought it because the thermostat on our very old range died, we can't find a replacement, and we are planning to remodel the entire kitchen next summer---so we did not want to buy a range just now.
The convection seems to speed up browning of items but not necessarily cooking all the way through, so you have to be careful --- we browned a couple of pot pies last night more than we wanted to! We are still getting used to using the convection feature.
The oven bakes everything in the same time as usual with a full size range. The difference is in the preheat time---it preheats way faster than the large stove. Also, we use the convection feature to speed the preheating phase and then turn it to Bake for the actual cooking. We have an oven thermometer hanging from the rack.
I roasted a 7 lb turkey breast in it shortly after it arrived--everything perfect. I did have to put foil on the bird partway through cooking, to keep it from overbrowning, but I do that for the full size oven, too.
The top does get hot but not as blazing hot as some reviews indicate. Ours is placed well away from cabinet bottoms, other appliances, etc. All of our existing casseroles and pans will fit inside except a 13 x 9" baking dish. I have a lot of Corningware pyroceram and even the large oval French White casserole fits (rather snugly).
You have to keep the inside spotlessly clean---these electric ovens *will* start fires if you leave a lot of grease and crumbs inside. The bottom pulls all the way out, for cleaning in the sink -- that gray thing in the photo is the handle that runs along the edge. The racks also come out, and when it is cool you can clean the inside easily. If you bake something that drips, like yams, put a piece of foil under it to make cleanup easier.
Someone in another review said he burned his hand opening the door--- I place my hand over, not under, the handle when opening the door and I do not get burned---I also have in my possession a number of potholders, and I use them! : -- )
We are very pleased with this purchase and to tell the truth, we are planning to continue using it after the remodel. It's great for baking something for one or two. I highly recommend it.

Double True Induction Cooktop - 2 Induction Electric Burner (S2F2) Review

Double True Induction Cooktop - 2 Induction Electric Burner (S2F2)

We have a small kitchen and every meal we cook my wife and i are running into each other. We wanted to be able to put a burner on our island too so we could stay out of each others way for safety sake. We looked at a regular burner vs induction and the true-induction people were knowledgeable and had first hand experience with both and explained it to me. Induction was definitely the way to go - i wish we had the money to replace our regular range with induction because of how fast it is. As i understand it induction uses spinning magnets to excite the molecules in the metal pans and the pan heats up instead of the cooktop. It is much faster. we can boil water in 90 seconds which is great because we never time the rice or pasta right with the rest of the stuff. Also we don't even like to use the small burners on the range now because they take sooo long to heat the pans, we use the bigger range burners and the induction (and on work mornings i want eggs fast, i only use induction - it takes about 45 seconds to get the pan heated to cooking temperature). What is cool about this model is it has a setting where you can pick the exact temperature you want your pan. we have had recipes we wanted to try that say "heat the pan to 325" - we never had a way before to really make that happen, it was always a guess.
