Sunpentown SR-1881S 1200-Watt Countertop Induction Cooktop, Silver Review

This induction hob is a great addition to any kitchen with Electric, Gas or Halogen cooktops. The hob does not heat up the kitchen as it cooks, cools quickly when you are finished and cooks quickly with instantaneous changes of cooking temperatures.
If you use a skillet to cook your steaks and then move the skillet to the oven to finish the meal, you can sear the steak(s) outside leaving the smoke behind and then move inside to the oven to finish cooking the meal.
If you are looking to cook anywhere, even outside, you can plug into any 110 outlet (2 prong) and start cooking.
The hob comes with a non-stick skillet which is geared to the induction cooking style which works very well.
Buy this and you will never look at your "older" style cooktop / stove the same way.

Electric induction elements provide best cook top performance, safety and efficiency. Unlike other electric elements, induction elements provide the precise temperature control of gas burners for gourmet cooking. Turning the dial down, the heat energy to the pan immediately decreases. Magnetic waves have no effect on skin or anything other than iron or steel. If the pan is accidentally removed from the cook top, no more heat is produced. Features ceramic glass surface made in Japan.

I have had this unit for about a year and am very disappointed with its performance. It takes FOREVER to boil water, in fact, I now heat the water to the boiling point in my microwave, then transfer the water to a pot on this burner. Considering the price I paid, this product is definitely not worth it. It's okay for simmering, but that's about it.

For most Americans who are not familiar with table top cooking (at the dinner table), Asians usually will make sukiyaki, shabu shabu, hotpot, grilled Korean beef ribs, etc etc on the dinner table. Especially during the winter. Great at potlucks, or any gathering. It's really fun and takes the stress off of the hostess on "what to cook", because you just need to prep meat, veggies to cook, and dipping sauces.
The induction plate will work with only stainless steel, cast iron, or any other pots and pans that's specifially designed for induction.
The best thing is, it is ONLY hot inside the "circle", while the outer edges are cold to touch, so no burning fingers! Plus, the controls make it very easy to change the temperature. It is electrical, so you don't have to worry about burning alcohol, or butane or such at the table. MUCH more safe.
My family can't live without one. I probably cook with it just about every day in winter.
Two important notes: do NOT put a hot pan on a cold induction plate (or vice versa). It damages the coils, and the ceramic.
Hot pan goes on a hot plate; cold pan goes on a cold plate. Once you are done with the cooking, turn it off the heat. Let it cool down, and then you can wipe the surface with a lightly damp towel . I've cleaned mine with a paper towel lightly misted with 409. Just make sure you don't let anything drips down into the vents (where it can come into contact with the inside).
Also, there are vents in the induction plate, and MAKE SURE there are no liquids dripping over it. (It will be like pouring water onto a frayed electrical cord -- bam, plate dies instantly). At that point, it's dead.

Sleek and energy efficient, this convenient cooktop brings the comfort and health benefits of home-cooked foods to the office, dorm room, cabin, or anywhere in need of a portable heat source. Unlike standard electric elements, it supplies an induction heating element, which delivers the same precise control over the heat as with a gas burner, but without the danger of an open flame. The 1200-watt single burner provides warm and cook functions, nine power levels from 260 to 1200 watts, and nine temperature settings that range from 120 to 420 degrees F--perfect for everything from gently soft-boiled eggs to hearty soups, stews, and more. Its ceramic-glass surface creates instant heat to induction-compatible pans, and with the heat turned down will just as quickly decrease the heat to the pan. For added safety, the appliance comes with overheat protection, automatic shut-off protection, and it will stop producing heat if the pan gets accidentally removed from the cooktop. Even more, its magnetic waves have no effect on skin or anything other than iron or steel. Other highlights include an easy-to-clean design that can be wiped down with a damp cloth as needed, a user-friendly push-button control panel with a digital display, and a 99-minute timer that aids in properly cooking all dishes, reducing the risks of overcooking, burning, and waste. The ETL-approved induction cooktop measures 13-3/4 by 11-4/5 by 2-2/3 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You know, flying cars, a monorail to whisk us to work, home fusion reactors to generate unlimited electricity, and dinner cooked over something they called "cold heat"?
Well, one of those miracles actually made it home.
Induction cooking might seem futuristic but the technology has been around since the previous century. It's finally emerging in two affordable forms: built-in and portable. Portable induction cooktops might not equal the speed of their stationary big brothers but they do come in mighty handy when you're in the mood for a hot meal but the weather isn't.
Like all induction cooktops, this Sunpentown Mr. Induction unit uses computer-controlled electromagnetic waves that induce metal cookware to create its own heat. The glass surface doesn't emit heat but instead absorbs some heat from the cookware, thus the warning printed right on the glass. Unlike a gas burner or electric surface unit, nearly all the heat cooks the food. Only the tiniest fraction escapes into the room. I don't have to tell anyone reading this that the same isn't true for even the most high-tech electric smoothtop ranges.
If there's a disadvantage to induction cooking, it would affect those with big collections of incompatible cookware, that is, non-ferrous pots and pans. Three simple tests will reveal what will or what won't work:
1. The pot or pan has to be at least 4 1/2 inches in diameter.
2. The bottom must be perfectly flat. It's OK if the bottom has a small indented or stamped trademark at the very center.
3. The bottom must contain enough ferrous metal to make a small magnet cling.
Happily, the qualities of good induction cookware are also those of good conventional heat cookware, so you probably won't have to replace everything in your cabinets. Test what you already have and add only the pieces you might need. Grandma's cast iron skillet and Aunt Sophie's enamelware Dutch oven were induction-ready ahead of their time.
Where you intend to use your induction cooktop is just as important. Stainless steel and other metal work surfaces can weaken the electromagnetic field, and may even heat up like cookware. Stake out a Formica, marble, granite or wood surface near an electrical outlet instead.
This 1300 watt cooker can't rival the speed of a 240 volt 3000 watter but with power equivalent to a 9,341 BTU gas burner, it has plenty of oomph to bring a pressure cooker up to steam and boil a stockpot of water for pasta. The front panel lets you step up and down through 20 power settings. Three touchpads are labeled MIN, MED and MAX. They jump directly to power settings 1, 10 and 20 but those settings are closer to KEEP-WARM, MIN and MAX. I used the MAX setting to bring my pressure cooker to pressure but when I switched to MED, the pressure dropped. I recovered the pressure on the MAX setting and then backed off to 12 to keep the pressure cooker hissing. The TEMP touchpad cycles through three keep-warm temperatures of 140, 167 and 194 degrees Fahrenheit. A built-in timer can be set for up to 9 hours and 50 minutes of cooking or keep warm time, overriding the unit's 2-hour automatic shutoff. I don't know how heat-resistant the plastic case is, so it's always best to lift hot cookware off the surface and never slide it off. The glass panel wipes clean once it has cooled down, which takes as little as a half-minute.
A note to the noise-conscious: All induction cooktops have fans to cool the electromagnetic coils. A portable unit isn't sunk into the counter so the sound is more obvious but much lower than the noise produced by a microwave oven or a range hood exhaust fan.
Since it's portable, it lets you cook anywhere there's an electrical outlet on a circuit that's not in use by another power-hungry appliance. As long as no one's using the microwave oven in the break room, you can wow everyone at the office with one of your home-cooked specialties. At home, you can adapt your cooking to the season. In winter, an induction cooktop is a handy keep-warm burner while the wasted heat from conventional cooking warms up the kitchen (but NEVER use the stove or oven solely for heating the room). Come the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, use your Mr. Induction to satisfy that craving for spaghetti and meatballs without sweltering at the stove. And don't be afraid to crank up the A/C and turn the ceiling fan on High. There's no flame to blow out, so there's no danger of gassing up the kitchen. At any time of year, induction is the method of choice for sustained low-heat cooking that would normally require a double boiler.
For about the price of a top-o'-the-line countertop convection oven, you can take your first steps into the futuristic world of induction cooking. But be careful. You may never, ever want to come back.

Micro-Induction Cook top provides the best in cook top performance, safety and efficiency. Induction heats as electricity flows through a coil to produce a magnetic field under the ceramic plate. When a ferromagnetic cookware is placed on the ceramic surface, currents are induced in the cookware and instant heat is generated due to the resistance of the pan. Heat is generated to the pan only and no heat is lost. As there are no open flames, inductions are safer to use than conventional burners. Once cookware is removed, all molecular activity ceases and heating is stopped immediately. The SR-1891B offers precise temperature control, multiple power settings, energy efficiency and overall safety.

Toastmaster 6431 Eclipse Single Burner Review

Toastmaster 6431 Eclipse Single Burner
Average Reviews:

The Toastmaster 6431 does not have an Underwriters Lab label, which would make anyone hesitate before buying it. The Underwriters Lab endorsement (a "UL" logo) indicates that the electrical product is properly designed and constructed so that it is safe. We found the product online, where there was no info about the UL status of the product.
The first thing that broke was the temperature control. We fixed that by oiling the screw whose in-out motion controls the heat setting.
The more serious problems emerged when the fuse blew. We looked inside and discovered overheated wires with partially-melted insulation. This condition could cause both an electrical shock to the user and an electrical fire that could burn down a house.
Toastmaster makes another hot plate (model TTS1) which does have an Underwriters Lab endorsement. We bought one today, and we hope that it will work safely until after the end of our kitchen remodelling project.

I was so happy when I purchased this item for Christmas 2002!
However my initial joy gave way to great disappointment within a four week period. After a few uses, the larger of the two burners stopped working completely. I contacted Toastmaster, only to be informed that the only service center in Florida was in Orlando and shipping to send the item for repair would cost me approximately $11! Almost half the original sale price ...
I contacted Amazon and they offered to accept a return...

1300 Watts Induction Cooktop (Silver) Review

I LOVE it. I hardly ever use my (electric) range. Anticipating that I'd be moving off the natural gas grid I bought this 2.5 yrs ago to see what life with Induction would be like. It's fabulous. Fast, responsive, accurate. I'm looking forward to remodeling my kitchen next year and adding a 30 inch all induction cooktop. I like a 36" cooktop, but with a portable like this one tucked away I can haul it out when I need the extra burner, and will be able to use my space more efficiently.
If you're curious about Induction, try one of the portables first. At worst, you've got a great extra station for a hot appetizer when you throw your next party.
Check out the Henkels Induction-ready cookware. One reason I balked at moving to Induction was that the cost of buying All-Clad adds a lot to the picture. But the Henkels is GREAT, well priced, comfortable to use, heavy. I hate giving up my clay pots that I use on the stove top, but - all around, Induction is the best alternative to gas. At least I'll be able to keep using them in the oven.

Fissler CookStar Induction Pro Portable Cooktop Review

Fissler CookStar Induction Pro Portable Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using my Fissler Cooktop for about a year now. Clean-up is easy - it took me a while to master the settings to avoid boil-overs. It's all good now.
Let me back-up a moment and describe this unit. This is a self contained counter top cooking device. It plugs into a standard wall outlet and requires the type of cookware that a magnet would stick to the base. This requirement rules out copper and aluminum bottoms. I believe iron may be used, but I am not totally sure.
The device uses inductive power to induce heat into the pan, not by a traditional heating element. Part of the advantage of this is when the unit is shut off after use it has no heat of it's own. When the cook surface warms up, it is from heat induced in the pan sitting on top. This unit will not operate or create any heat without a steel bottom pan sitting on top. This is a nice feature if you live in a hot climate (like me in Phoenix). The range in my apartment (Whirlpool) has a black glass top with with what looks like rings of red LED's below the glass to heat pans. This large range takes forever to boil water and stays hot for almost an hour after shut off. Compare to the Fissler unit that boils water fast and does not retain any heat when shut off. With this Fissler cooktop I can make spaghetti in less time than my whirlpool range can even begin to show visual signs of warming in the same pan of water.
The controls are all touch spots on the top near the front. To operate you need to enter an intensity number (1-9) and a countdown duration in hrs:mins. Touching the spots to enter the settings is slow, the unit cannot accept rapid touching, a measured pace must be used - perhaps one touch per second. I believe the unit starts to operate before all the settings are entered, which is a nice feature. There is also a quiet internal fan that starts once the power button is touched. You can change the intensity setting while running. If you wanted to enter a large cooking time number you press and hold down the up button and the numbers rapidly scroll upwards. There are other button features not covered in this review. I suspect it may be a bit fragile, as it came packed in a box in a box in a box. I doubt it would survive a quick trip from counter to floor. It appears to be designed so boil-overs will not penetrate the unit and destroy the electronics. It is not dishwasher safe, cleans up with almost anything.
This cooktop is larger than it appears in photos. Three inches tall, 14 inches front to back and 11 inches wide.
Pros: fast, economical, good looking, no residual heat when shut off, count down timer, easy to clean, short burst booster mode.
Cons: slow button input, easy to boil over, don't leave anything sensitive to magnetic fields nearby (credit cards, cellphone, TV, prosthetic arm or hand, etc), pan must stay on the unit when cooking or it shuts off.
Would I buy it again? Yes! There's two reason for not giving it five stars; too expensive, and button entry is slow and frustrating at times.
UPDATE: been using this for a while longer now. Boil-overs are rare for me now and I am still amazed at how fast it is compared to my whirlpool range, which hasn't been used since this arrived. With this unit I can have a bowl of spaghetti cooked and on the table before my range would even have tiny bubbles show, using the same sauce pan and same amount of water.

Cadco PCR-1S Professional Cast Iron Range, Stainless Review

Cadco PCR-1S Professional Cast Iron Range, Stainless
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this single burner range...I serially bought one of several different models (of single burner ranges) locally, tested them, and returned them all. I was disgusted. Then I got this one. It was considerably more expensive, but its rock-solid and has been in use about 18 hours a day, 24 in some cases, for several months.
Its a great size for pans and regular pots, but a bit too large for the smaller pots, like 1-1.5 qt (or even a 2.5 qt, if the latter's got a windsor bottom).
It warms up very quickly, and cools off more gently. If you're used to cooking with gas, this will be a shock because it's cast iron and holds the heat. If you're experienced in cooking with cast iron (pots, pans, ranges :), you'll find it utterly predictable, or at least I do. Sometimes you just have to remove the pan for a few seconds and turn OFF (not down) the heat.
I consider it easy to clean. I've never done more than blow a few crumbs off on the cast iron burner, but I imagine it IS a sponge eater if you scrub it with one (as noted by another reviewer). The burner has a rough surface, but that's all good in my book. It keeps pots and pans from too easily or inadvertantly sliding off the range - prevents potential disaster! The part of the range that I'm really concerned about keeping clean is what all surrounds the burner. That part is all brushed steel, with no seams or holes or "gingerbread", very sturdy, very professional, and a real breeze to keep clean.
Did I mention that I totally love this range, despite the hefty price? It was designed for working cooks, imho. If I ever need yet another burner, I won't bat an eyelash at getting this same model, or at recommending it to a friend.Apr '09 ----- >2 years after original review

I needed an extra burner and this meets my needs. I wanted to use it primary for pasta at the sink. Boiling on my regular cooktop, the moisture covers the microwave above it even using the fan. It is also difficult to carry a heavy, hot pot to my sink.
It looks modern enough to leave out in my kitchen so it's ready to use but compact enough to store in the pantry. I already had stainless steel cookware so I don't need any special pans to use on it.
It has other uses besides my intended use.

I was worried about ordering online and not being able to see the product in person. I was so surprised that it was so much better than I expected. I used it for canning and had a giant pressure cooker sitting on it. It performed perfectly and because it is so well made I expect that it will last me for years. Due to the fact the top area around the burner is metal you do not have to worry about a large pot extending out over the side of the burner and melting any plastic like other models on the internet. This burner works great if it works at all. My first one lasted just under a year, so when it just quit working, I bought another one. Well, the second one only lasted a month, so I sent it back to the company (at my expense) and when I got it back (refurbished or maybe new? I'll call this my third) it lasted just under 3 months before it died in the middle of boiling eggs. It might be cheap, but in the long run, it's not worth it.
