We live in MA and make use of a wood stove for our primary heat. I have been looking for a pair of gloves to replace the pair we wore out last winter. Our old gloves were from LL Bean and worked really well, to the point that I was easily able to pick up and adjust red hot logs.
These gloves don't offer the same level of protection. I can feel the heat and get burned much sooner than I did in the past. I think that they would work well for occasional fireplace or "low heat" use. I do like the extra long sleeve as it does help in keeping my forearm protected.
I would give them 2 1/2 stars if it were an available option.
Unbeatable Sale, Inc shipped the product right away and I received them in no time. They also included a pair of "thank you" mints in the package. A nice "old school" touch that you usually don't get from online retailers.

Burnmaster Hawk Wood Burner Review

Burnmaster Hawk Wood Burner
Average Reviews:

I've owned this style unit (single cord) for several years and really enjoy using it. It came with the proper cord and adapter so I can use other brand tips if I wish. The entire pen assembly disconnects instead of just the tip - I like this a lot! (A friend has the tip-only kind.) The cord is heavy duty. The unit heats up almost instantly and cools quickly. I've had no problems with it at all. Their selection of pens is good, but I usually end up only using 2 or 3 at most. I use it for gourd burning. The unit is fairly heavy, which means it doesn't move around on a table. We travel in an RV a lot; this just packs up in my traveling case with no problem.

This unit is a top quality wood burning unit that accepts ANY major brand of handpiece. The Burnmaster Hawk has a single port and pen rest, and it will heat in just seconds. You can use virtually any handpiece on the market, including the Detail Master and Razertip pens, as well as Colwood, Nibsburner, Navesink, and similar pens (not included). You supply the woodburning pens, and this unit brings everything else you need. Now you can choose the best shader, the best skew, the best spear, the best ball tip, even if they come from different manufacturers. Due to the unique overload protection, this unit will not burn out, even if you have a pen with a short in it. The Burnmaster has custom circuitry to detect abnormal conditions and trips a resettable breaker, thus preserving your unit. Another highlight is the smooth variable power supply, which adapts to various voltage levels with no special adjustments. Your pen will reach operating temperature in several seconds. This unit's circuitry was designed for woodburners and smoothly adjusts from low to the highest heat level. With 130 watts available, heat recovery seems instantaneous, and you have plenty of power in reserve for any future needs. The conversion cords (included) allow you to use pens with the smaller RCA jacks. The Burnmaster conversion cords and connectors are of heavy-duty construction, of course. The package comes complete with the base unit, metal pen holder (on top), single port, and one adapter cord for your current or even future pens. It weighs in at 4.5 lbs, and measures 3.5" x 4.75" x 8.5". The manufacturer's warranty is 3 years. Compare quality, features, and versatility, and you'll agree Burnmaster is absolutely your best choice for a very robust wood burning system that you will be proud to own.

Ease of use and generally convenient and a price that did not seem excessive. This little beauty is the only product I found. I am totally happy with it.

Note that this is calibrated only for single walled flue pipes. If you have double walled piping you'll need either a probe or stovetop style thermometer for an accurate reading.

got this for my nephew who loves fire. he wanted to keep track of the flue temps on our wood stove and it works as advertised. I gave it 4 stars because of the instruction on drilling the hole in the pipe. don't drill what they say, go a size smaller and it should fit much better.

I purchased these exclusively for grilling use. According to the other reviews, these are great for grilling. However, they must not have used this with cast iron on the grill. We have the lodge logic cast iron fajita plates that we use all the time. My husband tried to grab one of these off the grill using one of these mitts and the cast iron branded the leather and burned his hand immediately. So they may be good for regular grilling or the fireplace, I'm not sure, I just know that if you grill with cast iron or cook with cast iron...these are not for you.

A temperature probe is absolutely essential to monitor a catalytic combustor's performance and the condition of the fire.
It works quite well, but it took a little doing to get it to work that way. When I first saw it right out of the box it was indicating a temperature of 300 deg. Needless to say, this raised a mental flag. I had a good fire fire going and the probe was indicating a catalyst temperature of 1600 deg. This didn't seem possible to me so I threw the probe in a pot of boiling water, which physics dictates, should be 212 deg. It read about 500 deg. I set my oven for 400 deg. using a digital meat thermometer for a reference. The probe indicated a temperature of about 700 deg. By now I was convinced that the probe left the factory severely miscalibrated. I was able to loosen a nut in the back and adjust the dial to a temperature that agreed with me and my references. I should also mention that this was my 2nd probe and I had the same issues with the first one as well. The picture in the ad shows a probe with a scale that starts at 100 deg. and the pointer indicates that too. The probe I got starts at 400 deg. The probe pictured has a multicolored dial, mine doesn't. It also indicates a different catalyst temperature range. I find this a little peculiar. Maybe the laws of physics change depending on the color of the dial.

Works well. I assume its reading is representative of the temperatures. Color is not too bright and offensive. Looks good on black stove. You sometimes have to tap it to get it to give current temperature as it occasionally gets a bit hung up on its way up. Not the end of the world.

If you're using a woodstove, you need to know what's going on inside your chimney. If you're burning too cold, you could be coating your chimney with creosote, sending massive amounts of particulate matter into the atmosphere, and losing quite a bit of heat from your wood.If you're burning too hot, you could be wasting energy, damaging your catalytic combustor or even chancing a chimney fire. It's important that you know exactly what's happening, so you can burn efficiently, stay comfortable, and most importantly, stay SAFE.Condar patented surface thermometers are bimetal instruments that attach magnetically to your stove or flue pipe. They indicate the surface temperature, and by extension the temperature of the flue gasses. They're instrumental in fine tuning your burning habits for maximum safety and efficiency. The ChimGard 3-4 Thermometer is the most popular surface thermometer for use on single-walled stove pipe. Colored "zones" on the enamelled steel face indicate safe burning temperatures, letting you know what's going on. A cool-touch metal bail allows you to move the magnetic thermometer wherever you wish on the pipe, or you may use the safety screw (included) to insure the thermometer stays exactly where you want it, with no chance of slipping off the pipe.

This woodstove pipe thermometer is almost exactly like the one it replaced (also by Condar) which finally broke after 19 years. Hope this one lasts as long. It was the best priced of all thermometers I looked at. Easy to see temperature ranges marked "best operation", "too hot", etc.

OK, so this is only a thermometer so I won't write a long review, but I have to say that this little device helps me operate my wood stove better. It helps me know when I have the stove "overfired" or when I need to add more wood and turn up the oxygen. We've named the zones "Papa Bear" (too hot), Mama Bear (too cold) and Baby Bear (just right). Yeah . . . I know, but I have young kids.
