Hearth Country Premium Ash Vacuum Review

Hearth Country Premium Ash Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very hopeful for this product and excited to have an ash vacuum since last winter I had to shovel ashes. Needless to say I an very disappointed for shelling out our hard earned cash for a product that does not work. Unfortunately I had purchased from Woodland Direct and want to return it but I see the previous reviewer got stuck with it. I live in the Northeast and we cannot afford to buy another ash vacuum until next winter. The filter got clogged with ashes frequently and I could not complete one stove cleaning. The pull handle snap feature to vibrate ash from the filter was useless. I was able to suck up some ashes after taking the ash vacuum apart and shaking the filter outside. Then of course, it got clogged again. I would avoid this product because you cannot effectively return it.

The Hearth Country Ash-Vac is brought to you from the same manufacturer that makes the industry leading tri-motor professional chimney sweep vacuum. The Hearth Country Ash-Vac is made with the quality, detail and features you expect from a leading manufacturer. The Hearth Country Ash Vacuum is a Last Stage cleaner. It should be used to remove the ash dust left over after the fireplace has been cleared with a shovel. The built- in shake off filter clears any ash build up without removing the lid. To operate the filter: turn off the vacuum; shake the agitator tube to release the build-up and then turn the vacuum back on to continue cleaning. Home based ash-vacs should not be used to pick up hot/warm embers. Even though the Hearth Country Ash-Vac does have multiple design features to minimize embers from damaging the unit, use the Hearth Country Ash-Vac to pick up cold ash only. The hose is made of a light-weight metal alloy, the pre-filter is a fine metal mesh that protects the inner hepa filter. The bottom of the canister has a dual-wall sub floor keeping the outer canister cool. Ash enters the vacuum through the top of the unit minimizing the effect previously removed ash has on the suction power of the unit. Also, unique to the Hearth Country Ash-Vac is a center weighted comfortable hand grip and specially insulated 80db quiet motor. Don't damage your shop-vac or home vacuum when attempting to clean out your fireplace or pellet stove. Get the easy, quiet, ergonomically comfortable Hearth Country Ash-Vac.

Item is not suitable for use with a wood stove as purchased. Paint is not heat compatible and burns. Voids in the casting were filled with some kind of filler. Burned and melted paint had to be cleaned off stove. Entire pot needed to be sandblasted and properly finished with heat resistant stove paint.

I purchased this wood stove about 3 years ago. I have owned other stoves in the past and was very pleased with each one...until I bought this one.
I live in New England and here we need to depend on a good reliable source of heat.I had not seen this stove prior to purchasing it...mistake #1. None were on display anywhere in my area. I went on the recommendation of a friend who had one, but knew nothing about wood stoves....mistake #2.First off, the stove is very hard to regulate. It either is set low and smokes all over or all the way open and will blast you out of the house. It probably would work better in a large home for that reason.
It is a poorly built cheap quality most likely a Chinese made stove(as quoted on another website). The first year I had to replace the door gasket 3 times until I emailed the company and they sent one that has worked fine since. The door is out of alignment and doesn't fit flush. The hinges have a lot of slop in them. Year 2, the handle broke off, very poor design and materials.I emailed and complained about it and they did send a new one free. Year 3, Some of the fire brick are now breaking and the grate has broken. There is a big hole in the middle. A new one on their website costs $[...] + shipping. They are also to last for years according to their website.
This is not an air tight wood stove like I thought. There are gaps in the doors and The fire box is thin metal. Overall it does technically work, but for the money it is very, very poor. Please do yourself a favor and look to a different company.

I spent too much time surfing the web and stopping in retail stores looking for an ash bucket. This is the one. If you are looking for one save your time and look no more. I wanted SAFE. Ease of use and generally convenient and a price that did not seem excessive. This little beauty is the only product I found. I am totally happy with it.

Sleek & stylish, this Contemporary Ash Holder performs the essential function of containing the ashes & coals while adding a sense of modern elegance to your hearth. Copperfield 78160 Ecofan For Wood Stoves, Black Body, Gold Blades Review

Copperfield 78160 Ecofan For Wood Stoves, Black Body, Gold Blades
Average Reviews:

The blades move faster the higher the stove temp. A wood burning stove is best for this fan as the heavily insulated pellet stoves don't have enough surface heat to get the fan spinning decently. I have an Englander wood stove and run it at around 400-550 degrees and this fan pushes enough air that it will flutter a dangling piece of paper from 10ft away. It is also silent and I do mean silent (very nice) whereas those bolt-on accessory fans made for wood stoves that plug into the wall outlet sound like a hairdryer on terminal overload.
The fan generates electricity and runs from the temp differential between the stove surface and the heat sinks at the top (some kind of piezzo electric thing or some such). If you fire up the stove too hot (over 600 degrees) there's a metal flat spring on the bottom of the fan base that tips up the front a fraction of an inch to keep the fan from getting too hot and damaging it. As the stove cools back down below 600deg the spring straightens back out and the fan sits flat on the stove surface again.
I cannot recommend this product enough. It's wonderful.

Glass Cleaner, 8 oz Review

Glass Cleaner, 8 oz

The following applies to glass doors that have a fair amount of soot on them. Lately I have not been able to buy Rutland 84 Hearth and Glass cleaner in my area, it is a creamy consistency cleaner designed to take the soot off of glass doors with a little scrubbing. I've tried everything else available in our area including Rutland spray bottle (a liquid, not the same product as the 84 which is a cream) and four other brands that say they are fireplace glass door cleaners. I've tried white vinegar and wood ashes on a paper towel, which by the way works better than the other products but not as good as Rutland 84. Rutland 84 takes a few minutes to completely clean doors, the vinegar/ashes takes 10-15 minutes and you should take the doors off and lay horizontal (a pain!) and I don't think the vinegar is good for the door seal gasket. The other brands, including glass top stove cleaner, take a half hour of scrubbing and still leave a lot of soot on the door, they suck. I've had several types of fireplace inserts including my current Blaze King Princess, which is wonderful, but they all soot the glass after a week or so, without Rutland 84 I would not want to make a fire!!

Works well. I assume its reading is representative of the temperatures. Color is not too bright and offensive. Looks good on black stove. You sometimes have to tap it to get it to give current temperature as it occasionally gets a bit hung up on its way up. Not the end of the world.

If you're using a woodstove, you need to know what's going on inside your chimney. If you're burning too cold, you could be coating your chimney with creosote, sending massive amounts of particulate matter into the atmosphere, and losing quite a bit of heat from your wood.If you're burning too hot, you could be wasting energy, damaging your catalytic combustor or even chancing a chimney fire. It's important that you know exactly what's happening, so you can burn efficiently, stay comfortable, and most importantly, stay SAFE.Condar patented surface thermometers are bimetal instruments that attach magnetically to your stove or flue pipe. They indicate the surface temperature, and by extension the temperature of the flue gasses. They're instrumental in fine tuning your burning habits for maximum safety and efficiency. The ChimGard 3-4 Thermometer is the most popular surface thermometer for use on single-walled stove pipe. Colored "zones" on the enamelled steel face indicate safe burning temperatures, letting you know what's going on. A cool-touch metal bail allows you to move the magnetic thermometer wherever you wish on the pipe, or you may use the safety screw (included) to insure the thermometer stays exactly where you want it, with no chance of slipping off the pipe.

It looks great, no wires & it made a difference of about two degrees plus in the room which is great in the winter. The fan blades are a little light so don't drop it but they can be easly reshaped. I'm glad I got the larger of the two models. It's a great visual indicator, if the blades are turning slow, that you need additional logs. On the other hand if you can feel the breeze, shut the damper. I'm glad I purchased the Ecofan.

Caframo Ecofan Original, Black Review

It works. Very efficient use of the heat coming off of the wood-burning stove. You might find where some people state that it doesn't work, that it hardly spins or that it can't even move a piece of paper that you might place in front of it when checking airflow. To those reviews, I state that they did not perform proper placement as placement is the key. My wood-burning stove is an insert to my fireplace and I have my fan located on one of the sides, a few inches from the front and angled a few degrees to the center. The fan takes advantage of temperature differentials, meaning that it needs cooler air as well as hot. Thus, place the fan on the side and not dead center. My particular fan starts spinning (albeit slowly) when the stove's at a surface temp of about 100 degrees F. Spins faster as the stove temp increases. It's very quiet and is designed to move air in a wide dispersion (vs. a more narrow field, like you might get with a high-speed, 120V fan). I like it.

OK, so this is only a thermometer so I won't write a long review, but I have to say that this little device helps me operate my wood stove better. It helps me know when I have the stove "overfired" or when I need to add more wood and turn up the oxygen. We've named the zones "Papa Bear" (too hot), Mama Bear (too cold) and Baby Bear (just right). Yeah . . . I know, but I have young kids.
