I purchased the insert after continuing to read that steamed vegetables retained more of their vitamins and minerals. I did not want to go the bamboo steamer route, as I was afraid the wood could harbor bacteria. This product is now a must have in my kitchen. I have summarized my observations of this product below:
Pros:
1.Allows me to retrain more vitamins and minerals in the vegetables I feed my family
2.Easy to clean
3.Fits well in four or five of my Calphalon pots
4.Easy to store since it does fit inside other pots
5.Handles stay cool
6.Glass on lid is extremely thick
7.Glass lid fits snuggly which keeps steam from escaping
8.Large enough to steam a pound of haricot vert at one time
9.Excellent for making dim sum (steamed dumplings)
10.Reheats chicken breasts without drying them out
11.Can be used to refresh slightly stale bread

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-Quart Pot with Glass Lid and 2 Inserts Review

(More customer reviews)After stocking up on Calphalon cookware through Amazon, I almost purchased this item after reading the official Amazon review. Fortunately, I examined one while browsing a local store, and saw that only the bottom was aluminum core, not the sides, and the bottom was impact-bonded with a seam. Examine the Amazon close-up picture and you also can easily see the seam at the bottom.
The box I looked at clearly stated this as well. The multi-pot that I examined was definitely Calphalon Contemporary Stainless, not the less expensive Simply Calphalon series. This is not the 8-quart stockpot, which is much more expensive, and does not come with any inserts.
I am purchasing the Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless 8-quart stockpot instead, and finding an after-market stainless steel steamer insert. The inserts for this pan and the Simply Calphalon Stainless 8-quart multi-pot do not fit the Tri-Ply. The two pasta inserts that Calphalon offers for sale alone are for the professional and contemporary stainless stockpots only, and also do not fit the Tri-Ply.
The official Amazon review needs to be revised.

(More customer reviews)UPDATE AT BOTTOM: Wow, is this a neat appliance. As a pressure cooker, it cooks food as nicely, and as quickly as my old, stainless stove-top model, but with several bonuses. Cleanup is much easier with the Nesco. It browns your meat without any sticking, so you can just toss your other ingredients right in after browning, and switch it to cook. No extra pan to wash. The nonstick pot, also, is much lighter, and washes out instantly vs the heavy ol'stove model that required soaking. Best of all, though, is how quiet it is! No babysitting the constant CH!CH!CH!CH! on the stove anymore. Set it, and it cooks in complete silence without another moment's thought, and no adjustments necessary. You could leave the house (it also has a timer to start cooking later if you wish). The Nesco is a slow cooker, as well. I have been so annoyed with how hot all the new slow cookers are. I've bought several brands trying to fnd a true "slow cooker". They all cook at nuclear heat, and every review of every new slow cooker says the same thing. The Nesco cooks nice and slow just like the old fashioned crock pots did. I love this cooker. The manual blows, though. How strange that the cooker is so well thought, but the quality control for the manual fell flat. It is contradictory, incomplete, and explains the buttons and timer wrong. The recipes are not appealing. Who cares. You'll love the Nesco cooker. It will replace your crock-pot and your stove-top pressure cooker. I've not tried it yet on steaming, but it might just replace the rice cooker and veg. steamer, too. Think of all the room in your cupboards, now.
Jan 2001: OK, my original cooker still works and I still like it, but I'm ticked!!! off!!! at Metal Ware customer service. We got one of these for my brother for Christmas, and it would not even power on. Customer service at Metal Ware Corp requires us to pay to get it shipped for repairs. 15 lbs and a BRAND NEW ITEM and I have to pay this ridiculous shipping fee on top of the very expensive purchase price. I no longer have warm fuzzies for the cooker since customer service is BAD.

It isn't the El Cheapo department store variety that is held together with metal staples, bound to end up in the trash can after several uses. With proper care, this steamer should last you several years. Soak the new steamer in cold water for a few hours when you first get it. Always store in an open air place to prevent mildew. Clean up is a breeze, just wipe with a paper towel, or if needed a quick dunk in soapy water and then rinse.
Steamers fit best on woks that are 2 inches larger than the steamer, therefore, a 12 inch wok would work best with this steamer. Other than the recipe on the side of the box, there is nothing in the box other than the steamer. You can cook or reheat your food by placing it directly on the bamboo, paper towel, leaves, parchment paper or by placing it on a heat resistant plate or in a bowl. Also, you can add or remove steamer layers while cooking. For even quicker food prep, if you're having noodles with the meal, you can cook them in the water in the bottom of the wok - a one pan meal.Steaming is truly quick and efficient cooking at its best.

Crabs do steam a little faster because of all the holes in the insert pot. Also, clean-up is a challenge because it's big for the kitchen sink, but finish/granite ware does clean-up well. Great value.

(More customer reviews)I am cheap (Asian), and was not keen on plopping down $100 on this cooker. Totally worth it. I got it after I saw some little old ladies at 99 Ranch buying one!
Cooks hot pot like a CHAMP. I was using a single burner with a divided hot pot pot (lol) on top and I had to boil a separate pot the stove to keep up with demand (feeding 4 adults). No more! This thing is sooo convenient. Super easy to adjust the temperature and it heats up quickly.
Nice safety feature that it has a magnetic power cord, in case someone trips over it or you have kids. It stays on just fine.
Also works great as a steamer.
The finish is conducive to easy cleanup.
The grill part...well, I mean...it's essentially a one-sided George Foreman grill. Nothing too special there--but it is very easy to clean.
Buy it! You know if the old Chinese ladies at 99 Ranch were buying, it HAS to be good.
**Update**
Owned it now for almost a year. Still going strong, still highly recommended. It even saved me through a stove issue (2 weeks for the new part to arrive). There are a lot of things you can make with this cooker, I have to say.

Nothing gets the milk hot enough or produces the little bubbles that make the foam so lovely on top of a hot cup of drink. Maybe a bit pricey, but for the desired results, this is the way to go.

These little berries are very hard to juice, and with the hanging time involved (usually over night) it took at least twelve hours just to get the juice. (More customer reviews)A good kettle for adding humidity to the air on top of a woodstove. Do not buy this for drinking (tea, etc...) it was not made for that; it develops an interior rust crust after about a week. I would buy this again for my woodstove.
